I have a 16 hp briggs in my Max IV. When I climb even fairly shallow hills the max slows down considerably. I have the sticks all the way forward. I restored the machine this winter and have new bearings, chains, sprockets, spark plugs, fuel filter, air filter, I adjusted the transmission. The machine has plenty of low end torque and steers correctly. The engine never stalls. When I'm climbing hills the engine seems to be bogging down. I'm testing this on a paved street. I'm running 21 inch tires. I hope thats enough info. Thanks for the help Mike |

The lower HP engines do go very slow up hills. If you are running wide open on level ground and come to a hill, the 16hp engine doens't have enough power to maintain that speed under increased load. I am suprised you have that much slow down with 21" tires but I'm afraid that is normal operation with the 16hp engine. Check to make sure your belt is properly adjusted to get every last bit of speed out of it. |

The drive belt should have about 1 inch of play in it. Using a ruler, measure the maximum amount of play at the widest point between pulleys by pushing down on top of the belt. You have to loosen the motor mounts and slide the motor back to take up the slack. It is a simple exercise. Also, use some belt dressing on the belt to keep it in top shape. Bud |

Check the adjustment as Bud suggested, with belt deflection up to about 1.75". You have a Max IV so to tighten the belt you would have to add washers under the engine to raise it up. |

Thanks for catching me on the Max IV difference, Brandon. I was thinking Max II. Bud |
