I do not know this has been covered before, but has anyone installed Kohler LN690 in a Max II or an older Argo? The Kohler LN690 is the water cooled 26hp twin in Argo Avenger. Reading the board , more hp is the way everyone is going to. I has a JLO 400 which puts out about 30hp now and I would like switch over to 4 stroke. |

So I quess no one has that engine swap yet and my next question is; what other types of engine swaps have been done to the Max II? |

The factory briggs engine can be modified to produce far more power. My MAX4 will get out of control almost 2-stroke style unless you back out of it. Even on the steepest of hills full throttle is not used. |

Tim,what size tires are you running? I would like to get that feeling out of my max 4 butI'm running 26's.I always thought a smaller tire would be better for aggresive trail riding. The 26's are cushie nice ride and you don't hear that much thumping of your under belly because of the increased ground clearance. Now my machine appears to be sagging in the middle,if I have 3/4'' tire clearance thats a lot plus the factory changed my gear ratio a couple of months after purchase rpm's are lower, better when I run 21's for the tracks in winter. |

tim schotanus IS running 26"tires! he started with a 23hp block and added a basic rev kit only. then bypassed the govener and welded more support to the engine stand so it wouldent bend out of shape and alow the engine to get cloaser to the trany due to extreem deflection/load on the drive belt. (pricisly the way the factory did it on the 25hp kholers) you will likely want to perchus common factory type chain for the first chains off the trany to the rear sproket sets as they should be chainged at about every oil chainge just to be safe. or at least keep one of each chain onboard in your tool box for emergancys allong with a good chain braker and some good masterlinks. tim had some custom sproket sets made up also that place any multi sprokets on a single heavy duty hub so as to prevent shearing load haveing to pass threw the axel to get to the next sprokets ect..ect.. extra strong chains were extra brittle and his drive train now delivers considerably more shock wich is the downfall of the hardend chain. so thats why factory chain will outlast the hardend stuff in the primery chains. secondary and others are ok in hardend chain if you have the bucks to spend on it. keep your toolbox stoced with ideler bolts also! as to sagging i seam to remember one or two people posting that here befor , i beleave they were able to add some steal braceing somhow to hold the shape better, in fact i have noticed in the newer maxIV's some heavy angle irone running next to the seats i thought wouild support the center of the body quit nicely and that maybe it wasent there with anything to do with the seat persay, but i havent asked anyone from the factory about my observations yet. maybe you could, otherwise serch the ohio owner registry for mark harding, i think it was him who braced the saging maxIV in old posts. |

I have dome top high commpression pistons with I-beam conecting rods. new push rods and spring retainers and much more. It was a lot of work to get it right but you should see it go. I run the 26" tires. You are welcome to take it for a drive if you are in the New England area or I will be at the july ride at copper ridge |

Thanks Tim/Dave,factory changed my sprockets to a 1 pc. type where as pri. and secondary share the same hub, stiffened motor mount I had a earlier mod with the 25hp.that had to be revised. Will keep motor stock because machine is required to be dependable, travel a lone and deep.Just thought a smaller tire might be better to hit trails hard on rides.Good chance I'll see you Tim at copper ridge and will take you up on that ride. When I get home from working in Va. I'll try to bend or shape angle on the side to pick up center.Machine see's a lot of weight for camping and ice fishing ,might have distorted something this past winter. Noticed this issue when I took tracks off& put the 26's on.Hey if you ever spin that crank I have one ,journals polished, mic'ed at min.,less than 200 hrs.,magnafluxed. |

tims motors bin modifyed a few years now, its bin dependable. but the extra power is why the warning to use stock chain on primery, tim got over a year on the factory chain but only monthes on very very expencive harend chain. |

I've always thought as the stock koehler carb as being weak in the accelerator area.Would like to see a adjustable accelerator pump that has a longer stroke and bigger shot.Heard of folks fattening up on the jet but for slow or normal ridding might load up and foul plugs. It's tough to cover all the bases for all the riding enviroments. |

Hi Dennis, are you running the 25 horse Kohler? My 2003 25hp. seems to have good throttle response from either a stop or when running. If anything I could use a little more top end. Of course nothing else can catch a Max 1V in the water but the two strokes have no trouble kicking sand in my face. I easily outrun all of my friends on their Bigfoots or the Avenger but a young friend of mine bought an older Argo Vanguard 16 horse Briggs with manual brakes that runs very well. I rode in it for a whole day once,a bit short on foot or leg room! That machine outruns me on the level by about 5 m.p.h. I,m starting to dislike the kid just writing this! |

PHILIP,very satisfied with my kohler 25 in my 1999 max 4.Speed never insterested me or the application of the machine,it's torque I like.I always thought if the accelerator pump could be adjusted like my harley I would have punch without fowling problems when extra juice is not required as would be the problem if I jetted up.Yeah I saw modified 2 strokes that kicked butt Don't know how they stay seated guess it takes a young butt and brains. |

Dennis, I don,t know if your last sentence is true, but some of the 2 strokers will like it. Mr.Berger seems pretty smart but of course i cant comment on his butt! I Installed Bosh plus 4 plugs on Brandon,s recommendation and they seem to be still firing strong. Philip |

you know i did think about responding with the soloution i cam up with, but had my second thoughts, mostly the loops of seat belt type straping i put on the floorboard are the key. i slip my feet in em when i need to keep controle . i can push agenced them to press my back firmly agenced the seat back. also i modifyed my seat back taller and with three sections, one of witch was bigger to fill the small of my back when i was pushing back agenced it. this holds me in prity good, also i try to pull upwards on the laterels when the goin gets realy bumpy. i have a seat belt but do not use it. i find with my open -non rolbar equiped machine i can still release the loops and get my feet out with ease when it is posativly nesesary. although ocationaly i have had to pilot my machine whilst hanging off the side till i could drag myself back in. once they get to bouncing you have to keep em strait no matter what! |

Thanks Dave,I might give that a try, beats wearing knee pads and wedging knees against the dash to push butt into seat.Philip, would those spark plugs be a fine wire type? I think I have champions version in my new motor they seem to fire better. When max got frozen over when left out in freezing rain then temp. dropped to 5 degrees machine fired good once I freed choke and throttle, see thats why I'm scared of engine mods.in stock form might be more suitable for those unavoidable times. |

Hi Dennis, no not fine wire type-four electrodes around circumference come up to nearly meet in center. My machine has been rolled twice and sunk once but never allowed to freeze when wet I would try to avoid having that happen if you can. If you read back in old posts there was a lot of discussion re: spark plugs. Philip |

Well Phil,I wish I could contol the weather when out on ice fishing/hunting/winter camping adventures but besides some trails rides that's max's application.I had a earlier post about anti- icing kits with no response, but bought 1 of 3 kits available from kohler and problem went away.Nothing worst than watching the sun come up waiting for your throttle cable to warm up to go deer hunting or to load it to go home.Keep the chains lubed with chain lube and a coating of bearing grease to keep rust down and prevent freezing of the chains if tub has water in it surrounding chains.I'll check out those plugs thanks ,Dennis |
