After rebuilding my '91 Max IV, I am working out bugs. One of these involves getting more tension in drive belt (which is new). Even with Magnum 20 engine all the way forward and engine platform all the way forward, I still have about 2" or so play from relaxed position to pushed in. I plan on adding thick washers between rubber mounts and engine platform. Any other suggestions? Also, I noticed that in adjusting chain tension with one side elevated, it gave a false tension on the front chain due to frame flex (showed to be tight when actually not). Isn't it better to put Max in neutral and roll it forwards and backwards to ensure no tight spots since this is the way it will operate? Thanks./BBC |

Have you tried running the engine to see if the belt engages on the clutches? 2" doesn't seem like too much play. On adjusting chains did you have the machine up off the ground then spin the tires back and forth a couple of times before adjusting. If you are getting a false sense of tension and that much frame flex I'd check for cracks or other damage to the frame or loose bearing flanges to the frame. |

Belt engages on the clutch just fine so maybe I have enough tension. Frame is solid and flanges are tight so maybe I just needed to rock tires first. I'll recheck this. Thanks Jerry./BBC |

Hey B.B., it sounds like your belt tension is probably correct. If it did need adjustment the owners manual says to loosen the nuts that hold the engine down to the engine platform. The studs that stick up don't turn when you loosen the nuts but on the studs you will find probably 2 washers with an opening in the outer ring. If needed you can make up additional washers and add one more to each corner to tighten up the belt. I did this to my 2003 Max 1v before I learned from Fred Sowerwine that you should be able to wrestle the belt off and on, with difficulty ,but without tools. Since then I have replaced my belt but never adjusted it. I use belt dressing like Fred says. Re: chain adjustment, wheels MUST be able to turn. jacked up, in nuetral, parking brake off. Happy riding W. Philip Cox |

Thanks for the advice. I have made up some slotted washers to shim the engine platform up a little, if need be./BBC |
