in the argo manuel it quotes the max sideslope and gradiant as 30 degrees before the engine starts to be at risk from oil starvation is this right has anyone had problems with this |

Hi Mister Smith- I don,t have much experience driving an Argo but I have spent many hours following one of them. 8 Wheelers 6 wheelers, old ones, new ones, Big Foots powered by Briggs&Stratton,conquests with Kawasaki engines and a few times the new Avenger with the liquid Kohler. It is always hard to guess the degree of slope that you are climbing or traversing (Good advice is avoid the sidehills) but I have followed all of the above ARGOS UP AND DOWN hills steep enough to scare me silly and I have never seen one starve for oil. I don,t think you need to worry about that unless you are doing some really awesome driving and if you are please contact me cause I want to come and watch! W. Philip Cox |

I have starved my engine for oil and had to replace it when using a winch. It happened when I had to winch out of a steep creek bed. We were pretty far away from the entry point when I heard the noise over the engine of many a loud boom - thunder! A quick climb to the top and it confirmed my fears. A storm was moving in and quickly. I have seen this creek flood and it is not pretty. If it floods and you are in it, you die. My battery did not have enough amp capacity for the steep pull. I had to run the motor (not thinking). It seized shortly after reaching a safe level above the creek bed. I was so panicked at the near death experience, I really didn't connect the engine seizing incident. I broke it free and it ran just fine. Then I winched up the machine up a tree to test a new winch/connecting system. This time it froze up good and threw a rod. The moral of this story is not to end up in creek beds with a flooding thunderstorm coming. And not to winch your machine up a tree. When the engine seized during the winch testing, the winch would not hold and the machine lowered on it's trailer hitch between two roots. Now I was stuck with the machine up a tree, in the side yard, visible from the street, and the wife driving into the drive way. Not good at all. I ended up having to use another winch tied to a car to drag the rear end out between the two roots. In retrospect, the near death experience was from the wife and tree incident. I do plan to get a good gel cell battery with capacity for a trolling motor and a good vertical winch emergency. |
