I just bought a used maxll. Its a 2001 with a 14hp vanguard, and the hour meter shows 800hrs. What should I do first as far as maintenance. I want to do whatever is needed to have a reliable machine. |

i just bought my max and replaced all the chains and installed new adjusters they vere very worn the adjusters were almost gone if the sprockets look good check the chains make sure they are good if the adjusters need replaced check out the roller adjusters at route 6x6 i used them and was very happy change the fuel filter and the air fiter check the belt for wear and cracks if your going to do it may as well do it all while the body is off have fun they are very easy to work on |

Tighten the bearing mounts inside and the axle flange bolts, the motor mounts, the T-20 mounts, the hitch mount, and if you have one, the winch mounts. Grease the axle and jackshaft bearings with marine grease, making sure you do not over grease. Get a cable lube kit and lube the throttle cable. Change the engine oil and filter, Briggs wants 10W30 under 40 DEg F and 30 weight over 40 F for the Vanguard. Even with 10W30, my 16 HP Vanguard holds 80# of oil pressure when it is cold until it warms up, then it holds at 30-40 lbs. Make sure the drain plugs are in place. Lube the chains. I use motorcycle chain lube. Make sure the air pressure is the same in all 6 tires or the machine may pull to one side or roll a bead off the rim. When going straight keep the steering levers all the way forward to reduce wear on the t-20. Check the battery. Check that all the axles are in line and check each bearing lock collar for tightness. Clean any debris out of the hull, especially around the engine. |
