HI ED; Is it a Max ii or IV? What engine? What Year? Is the air cleaner clean? Somebody on this site can help you for sure but they"ll need a bit more info. When did you change the plugs last. Was it running fine recently? W. Philip Cox |

Did it start doing it right after belt was changed? The right belt make a differance. Also a wore out belt(narrow) gets sucked deeper into driven pulley and goes out further in drive pulley creating an overdrive affect. Possibly was topping out greater with old belt and now with new belt might notice differance. Just ideas |

You need to get the machine outside and run it in nuetral while revving the engine. Look at how the belt rides on the drive clutch and driven cltuch. As engine speed indreases, the belt should ride higher in the drive side and lower in the driven side. You should be able to judge just by looking at it to see if the belt goes all the way to the top of the drive and the bottom of the driven. If the belt is too loose, it will not ride where its supposed to and if its too tight, the machine will want to move when the transmision is in gear and the engine is idleing. |

Hi Ed- Recreatives changed the springs & weights in the driven and drive clutches, and I believe it was after 1995. The new setup gives you more top speed without much change in climbing power. Has your max always lacked top speed? If so their high speed clutch kit should help. If it is slower than it used to be you will have to keep checking for the problem. |

HI ED ; thanks for the info. if I have it right,- you said-1995,14horse Max II with new plugs and fuel filter runs good but will not top out. You didn,t mention the air filter,it's not likely the problem but it's worth checking. I rolled my MaxIV in New YOrk last year and got oil on the inside of the paper filter, it was straining all 25 horses untill i got home and changed the filter--instant cure! Do you have a tach? Will it rev to full speed in neutral- if not, loose throttle cable? W. Philip Cox |
