I have a 1993 MaxIV,with 20HP Koehler engine and T20 tranny.It has around 180hrs total usage time, and hasnt been used for a few years. The problems I am having are as follows: 1. No right brake & no right reverse. Forward is ok and the left side if fine too. 2. The right hand side steering linkage was bent, but I was able to straighten which enabled it to go forward. I have read quite a few of the other questions posted here and tried some offered solutions but still cant get it to turn right.Would replacing the drums be of help? I appreciate any info given for this problem and would like to add that this is a really informative site for the new owner! Other than the above, this unit is in almost new condition and I cant wait to get it out and about. Sincerely, Eddie} |

It is hard to guess or diagnose from a description but here is what I would look for.
1. Broken shift pin on the right side.
Remove the shift pin and use a screwdriver to try and shift it into gear. Inspect the shift pin for damage.
2. Worn band on right side.
3. Check the band group of components. |

Eddie, Will you tell us how much travel you have from front to back on the left steering lever (measure from the dash with the lever all the way forward to the center of the hole in the rubber hand cushion and then measure with the lever pulled all the way back - the difference is the amount of travel. Both laterals should be even when they are all the way forward. Will the right steering lever go farther back than the left when you pull them both back at the same time? Is the left several inches from the seat and the right goes all the way with the seat stopping it from going further?
My guess is that you have a broken reverse drive/forward brake band on the right side (you could pull the upper plunger out of the tranny if the brake lever were to be removed. It could be that that band is very much out of adjustment or that all the friction material is worn off. It will most likely entail going into the tranny to fix (anything other than band adjustment) and unless there has been metal to metal contact between the band and the drum (grooves in the drum), there is no reason to replace the drum.
If you have excessive travel with the left lateral also, it is possible that band adjustment will solve your problem, but again, my guess is that it is broken and that is why it was parked and not used. 180 hours is generally not enough usage to require band adjustment. |
