The Max 2 I am being offered by a dealer that is apparently going out of the Max business is a new 2003. Are there any differences when compared to the 2006? This one has H/D axle and 22" tires.

There are many differences in the 2006 models over previous years. As I mentioned in another topic, the 16 and 18hp Max IIs now have the internal muffler and cooling duct just like the 23hp Kohler. It is a much cleaner set up and the quietness achieved by the new muffler is awesome.
New vehicles have black powder coat rims. They not only look better, but the old grey rims had a problem with paint flaking off.
The '03 might have the new throttle lever and choke, depending on when it was built. Those improvement came that year. Also the new Max IIs have the new snap ring center sprocket instead of the set screw you'll probably find in that '03. The snap ring will save you many headaches down the road. Set screw sprockets tend to work loose and move down the axle, allowing the chains to jump off.
You won't get any service from the dealer you told us about with the '03. There is a reason he can't sell a machine he has had for three years. Buy from the factory or find another dealer near you that will help you after the sale.
