First Post. I bought a used 2001 Argo Bigfoot along with all the manuals and am mechanically inclined. I've done all the greasing and oiling, cleaning battery terminals, made adjustments to the idler tension, etc, very tight working space to say the least. For a couple of greenbacks they could have made oil changes a bit easier but...they didn't. Did the baggy trick to drain the oil, minor amount of leakage. Barring brute hand strength, is there any type of filter wrench that can be applied to the oil filter? I did a search to find a filter relocate kit, it mentioned Perma-cool kits. Does anyone know the exact part number for an oil filter relocate kit for the B&S 18HP motor. Thanks.

Is your filter that hard to get to and you want to relocate because of getting to it? I have a filter wrench that fits on to the end on the filter and it gets a good grip. I only needed it the first time I removed the old filter. The ones I have replaced since are only on hand tight and turn off easily by hand. A cheap rubber strap wrench will work also at getting it off. I'll check on a relocation kit but I would take the corrct filter in to a parts store and have them use it to check the sealing surface and threads with some automotive applications.

From the books I have that engine should take a 3/4"-16 threaded filter. Perma-cool has a kit to fit it. J.C. Whitney has the kit number zx146174a which is a single filter kit for $47.99. If you are going to go with a relocator maybe you should also throw in an oil cooler too since you will have the hose to splice into. With the relocator you could use a much larger filter and add the cooler to help with engine temp and oil breakdown.

Thanks Jerry for the quick response. Yes, the filter is at the rear of the motor, tilted away from the belt, forward of the disc brakes and I can barely get my fingers around it. I guess the previous owner must have had a pet gorilla to replace the filter. I've got about one ounce of patience left to try and get my other filter wrench on there, it's specifically made for small filters, it's an adjustable model that has 2 spring loaded slide apart jaws. Just a matter of twisting myself under the dash. If that doesn't work, then I'll try the strap model. I'll see if there is an replacement filter available from the synthetic oil company I buy my lubricants from. Thanks again.

Can't you get to it from under the hood and not through the dash? Reach down between the transmission and engine from the right side of the vehicle and reach in and turn it with your right hand. There is a socket type wrench that will fit on the filter from the bottom. Or you could use a long screw driver or pipe and hit the screw driver with a hammer so the filter turns CC. I'd say someone cranked it on way to tight.

To get at it fromm the engine hatch, I would have to take off the drive belt and belt cover, right now I can't even see the oil filter from the top. I may just take the belt off and get some working room. That will be next weekends work. Thanks.

Careful using oil filters used for different applications, they have different bypass/relief settings.I believe I saw a oil filter relocation kit made by kohler when looking on line in kohler plus.com.I'm sure its not cheap as with any small engine part.

Can you see the filter from the right side of the vehicle from the opposite side of the drive belt? I don't know what would be between the transmission and engine that would block access to the filter if you go at it from the right side, or driver side or battery side. DCAM0044.JPG

Just went to kohler for you,kit#24-702-02-S,includes filter. Pancake type adapter with 23'' long lines,so if a kohler filter will fit your briggs that might work.

No, can't see the filter from the right side, the disc brake cooling unit with the big pipes sits right between the engine and transmision, I'll see if I can snap some picutres and post them for you.

Erich, you can pull the trans clutch/pulley off with one bolt. Then remove the belt guard and put it on a shelf.. that opens things up a bit. I roll the belt off any time I work in there.
