Hi all, I have always liked 6x6 and tracked atvs, and have just discovered one at my grandfathers place. It turns out that back in the 70's he and one of his friends built a couple of tracked machines to take hunting into the muskeg in the Rocky Mountains, I would like to restore this machine, but I need help and mabye opinions on what to do haha. ok let me start off here.
#1. The engine is a V6 from an Austin sports car with a manual transmission, the engine has been covered with a plywood box and looks fairly decent. Should I replace the engine or get the engine in it running.
#2. One of the axles is bent, thus that is why it was parked, what should I do about this, the machine runs on tracks by the way.
#3. The floor and side is made out of plywood and is now rotted, should I replace this with new plywood or sheetmetal?
#4.What are some ways to remove rust? Wire brush and grinder?? I'm guessing
all of your help would be appreciated, this is quit and extraordinary machine and I would enjoy restoring it , thanks for all your help |

hi danrz,
sometimes we 6x6'rs have to straiten an axel or two in a hurry and whilst on machine, we acomplish this task with automotiv floor jack a lenth of chain with hooks, something steal or maybe a 4x4 bord to put jack on top of and also wrap chain around this bord and your axel at the aproxemet area where the bend is, next rotate your hub till its in most lowest point and place jack under the hub there, you then jack the hub up agensed the chain and give it some more stroks to start it bending the other way, give it a few seconds and release it, next rotate the axel hub a few turns with your jack cloase but not toutching so you can gage if it is still off and by how much ect..ect..
you then place the hub again with lowest point down and the jack under hub to try again, .
when you get it within 1/8" you should quit because it is posable to overdo it and bend it out the other way.
this is done most frequintly at an event whereas there is not time to take axel out of machine to replace it before the next ride, |
