hello to all, i just bought my 1st 6x6...yippie! but i think it's already broken...gurm. it's a Big Max (basicaly it looks just like a Max-II) and the guy i bought it from thinks it's a mid 70's model. before i bought it i rode it around his yard and it ran good with the exception of reverse. when you put it in reverse it would pull to the right and the left handle had no effect on it. when i got it home i drove it all around the yard and all of a sudden the left side stopped working completely, only the right handle has any effect in forward or reverse. since i just got this thing i'm not spun-up on the mechanics of how they work...yet. do these transmissions have clutch disks that wear out or anything like that? are there service manuals available for them? any hints, suggestions, or ideas anyone may have would be greatly appreciated. overall this thing is in pretty good shape (body frame, etc) and i plan on fixing it up and using it for the long term. thanks in advance. |

Sounds like it may be a simple broken shifter. The diamond shaped lever on the top of the trans near the output sprocket on each side is the shifter. There is a little peg that can be broke off when abused. The left side might have been in forward when it broke, not allowing you to shift back into reverse. Now you've lost the left side completely so maybe it just slipped into neutral. Remove the small braket above the shifter on the trans. Most of these pull up easily but check for an inside C-clip first. See if the peg on the bottom is broke. If that is not it, we'll have to go into checking bands. Do both sticks have ths same travel distance? A broken band will allow the drive stick to move an excessive distance. You can call me at 888-826-1704 and I'll walk you through all the steps to fixing it. |

a 70's t20 trans has a snap ring holding the shift towers in the newer ones have no snapring and a bracket on top of the shifter tower witch bolts to the 2 top case mounting bolts. I left out the snap rings and bought the brackets that way if you break something on the trail it only takes 2 bolts to get the lever out. wrenches are more likely to be found in an onboard tool kit than angled snapring pliers. also when a shift tower pin brakes you can remove the tower and can get a screwdriver in the hole to shift it |
