Max uses the t20 so what is the trans called in a argo? I can find everthing I want on the t20 but nothing on the argo. From what I know(I think) it is just a gearbox with two speeds forward, reverse and a differential. Is that right? What about transmissions in hustlers attex, etc? Are the all differential driven also? Thanks Larry |

The transmission in an Argo is an ODG desgin ( Argos parent company) They are the only source for them other than used (Richard Clark). The newer Attex machine (1972 and up) use the T-20 as well as the Hustlers. The old Attexs used a planetary type transmission that did not use differentials (real 6 wheel drive). The Sperry Rand Wedge,Scrambler,Sidewinder,Alsport Tracker and others used a clutch/brake mechanism on each side of the vehicle giving true 6 wheel drive. They have some shortcomings as well , but at least they are true 6 wheel drive. The Amphicats transmission I belive is closest to a T-20 style transmission, but I have never had one apart. I do have 2 of them , but never ran either to know if I have an extra or one good and one bad. The Terra Tigers used a cone type transmission but I have never owned one to understand how they work. Maybe mark with the killer silver Terra Tiger will chime in and explain the theory behind one. |

Thanks, liflod. I think there must have been two differant version or models of amphicats because I alway read stuff about amphicat and mine is always differant. Mine is a model b7 and originally had clutch/brake mechanism but was completly disassembled and was missing pieces when I got it. It had a odg transmission with just forward and reverse. I have also seen a diagram for the axle bearings showing a four bolt flange and mine only has three. I am guessing mine is an older model. Anybody know how the planetary works? That cone one sound interesting also. Thanks everybody Larry |

A while back I posted a reply to "how a T-20 works" on this message board. You can try searching the board. Lance |

LARRY WRIGHT, AS TO OLDER ATTEX'S TRUE 6 WHEEL DRIVE, YES THERE WAY CONTROLABLE BUT THEY DID THIS WITH DIFERENTIALS, 2 OF THEM, ONE PER SIDE, BUT THEY DID IT WITH OPEN DISC BRAKES TO CONTROL THE COUNTER ROTATING DRUMS, THE DISCS MAKE DRIVE POWER AND BRAKEING FETHERABLE, WHEREAS THE T-20 IS QUIT SIMILER IT HAS AN ENCLOASED DRUM ADIFERENTIALS SYSTEM, BIGGER HEAVER AND HOTTER THAT WAY, AND ALL THIS CONTROLED BY SELF ENERGIZEING DOUBLE WRAPED BANDS, VERRY STURDY BUT CLUNKY (AS APOSED TO SMOOTH) NOT AS FETHERABLE, FAIRLY DANGEROUS UNDER BRAKEING, BUT DID I MENTION NEARLY BULET PROOF? THE SAVEING GRACE FOR THE T-20 IS FOR THE MOST PART THERE RELYABLE, BUT TRICKY TO DRIVE IF DRIVEING REALY FAST IS YOUR BAG, DRIVEING THE OLD ATTEX ATV MANUFACTUREING CO. TRANYS REALY FAST IS LIKE BEING A JEDI USEING THE FORCE, HEH HEH HEH |

Larry, The Argo tranny works very similar to a slip rear end in a vehicle. It does have High gear, Low gear, Reverse, and Neutral. |
