Hi everyone- nice site you have here. I just got ahold of a mid to late 90's Max IV with a 20 hp kohler. It has 160 hours and runs great. It was a real mess and I have it looking new. I have one issue and maybe it's supposed to happen but I'm not sure. When I corner hard to either side it makes a loud clunk like a chain is binding in one of the sprockets. I have a feeling it's not adjusted right but who knows? I can tell you lots about compact tractors and 4 wheel atv's but these are new to me. Am I going to break it by driving it? is this normal? anyone have an idea what is making the noise and how to fix it?

Thanks for the help to anyone who got this far! I can't believe what this thing does in my woods!

Jim, Welcome to the world of skid steers. The more you use it, the better it will do for you. If you don't have an owners booklet and service pack, you should get one from RI, most any Max dealer, or Richard Clark (the owner and webmaster of this site). Yes, you should attend to things when they go haywire and fix them right with the right parts. If you do this, your machine will be very reliable and last for a long time.

Your noise could be from several things. (1) chains out of adjustment; (2) bolt slop in the sprocket tubes (if you have splined axles, you can rule this out, but make sure the sprockets are fastened to the axle); (3) bad bearing, loose or broken lock collar. Make sure you have the wheels off the ground when adjusting chains and rotate each chain individually to find the tight spot. Adjust at the tight spot and have 1/2 inch deflection. If you have bolt slop, you can fill the holes with weld and re-drill or put on Richard's washers. If it is bearings, you can get replacements at NAPA or a farm supply store as well as RI , Richard or a bearing house.

It could be a bad tooth on a sprocket or a frozen link in your chain.

Check and make sure your tranny mounting bolts are tight.

You can call RI with your serial number and they will tell you what year it is. If you have drum and band front axle brakes, it is a 1995 or before. If you have a disk brake with a "lock in place" feature, you have a 1996 or later.

you hit it on the head, jack one side up and put it on car ramps under belly on side in frount and back, now play with the wheeles, this will tell you wich chains are too dang loose, from there you should be able to see how the adgustments for chain tentioners work.
do one side and then the other,
not too tight ether!
as this promotes whare n tear as well,

It was infact chain slop. I tightened up the adjusters and the noise stopped. The chains seem tight on toi top and loose on the bottom. I'll try lifting them up off the ground. They were alos dry as a bone from sitting. I have disc brakes so I am figuring 1996. the engine is a 1995 for sure, i have the code book to tell that from kohler.

Pretty cool machine for sure. I took it down my brook today. My quad goes some places this wont but very few, this goes LOTS of places I wouldn't dream of taking my quad!

I sent richard an email, waiting on a response for a throttle cable, manual and now a parking brake latch (the red handle one that holds the brake)

The tank was 1/2 gas and 1/2 water from sitting. I drained it and got it running pretty well. It only has around 160 hours - most from the key left on. It sat quite a bit outside (shame) but it's in nice shape with a roll bar and perfect body. I only have about 1500 bucks into it so I can justify spending a few more.

Thanks for the advice. The guy I got it from put a new chain on the rear( the old one broke). I think there is one or two links too many in there becuase the adjuster is all the way down and the chain is still loose. I may pop a link out tomorrow and see how it tightens up. It's a new chain so this shouldn't be an issue.

Thanks again for the info..Jim
