Good afternoon gentlemen,
I just bought a 1978 MaxII with a JLO 2 stroke. It has several cracks in the lower body and it appears one or more of the axles are bent because riding on the hard pack it bounces a bit. It has the old style flotation tires. It runs super and has plenty of power. The weird thing about this max is that somebody installed a foot operated gas pedal which I don't care for because I am used to using my feet to brace myself in my new maxII.Here are a few ?s I have if you guys would be kind enough to try and help me out.
The fluid in the tranny looks like gear oil. Should I be using atf even though this is a older unit? Will the bend axles damage anything if I leave them as is? (I can only notice it a lil on the hardpack or road) How big of a job would it be to install everything in a new lower body so this unit could be a floater? What CC/HP came in a 78' maxII?

Thanks Guys
Happy Trails!

redrum the old max is most likely made from ABS,
this can be repaired if you still wish to float it.but if you do have a polyethilin lower body it would be a good upgrade.
a pain in the *** but good upgrade!
you might be able to keep the axels straitend right on the machine with automotive floor jack and a chain method formaly shown on pete cagles site.
this method works ok if you canot get the old ones free from bearings to straiten them in a press.
the abs is so easy to fix it's silly,
i have A.B.S. repair kit's if your interested.

Thanks for the tips guys! David hit me up with a email about the plastic repair kits you have. Can you fill in a 6inch hole with this kit? Would one need to install a screen backer and go over the screen with the repair material? Maybe I could get you over here to Nashua to do the repair for a price? The #'s on the side of this JLO engine says 297-U and its a single cyclinder. And it appears to be a 5 bolt head if there is such a thing lol. Where on the body would I find the serial #s? There isn't any tag on the dash like on my 2001 M2. Thanks again for the input everyone!
Tim

this model may be erlyer than you thought because old style flotation tires were phased out arround 1973.
do you have a garage to do the repair in?

drying of the matireal is afected by temp.
