I recently purchased a Sierra Trail Boss and the original Kohler 20 hp engine had been replaced by a Rotax 299 c.c. Anyone know what the horsepower would be? I am also trying to identify the year.
The number on the tag is 1583217.
ANY ROTAX EXPERTS OUT THERE?

THANKS!

Chris,
The old Intertec Snowmobile manual I have lists a Rotax displacing 299.4cc and gives HP as 12 - 15.

Chris... I hate to show my ignorance ... BUT ... are you sure you are looking for info on a 299cc Rotax ... and not on a 399cc..?
The reason I ask is Rotax and JLO are nearly identical ... and ... 252cc - 295cc - 399 cc are USUALLY the correct sizes. IF your ROTAX is a twin cylinder ... it's probably a 399cc engine. and I can help with info. IF it is 299cc ... sorry..!

Kevin, Thanks for taking the time to look.
I appreciate the info. Does your book have the recommended gas/oil mix ratio?

JT, It is definitly a 299 according to the Tag. It is a single cylinder and says Rotax on it. I wish you were right (399). I could use the extra power! Maybe next winter I will transplant a 440 or something. Any good suggestions for upgraded power?

Chris ...!
Before you upgrade power ... strongly suggest you beef up those two Trailboss trannies. The are notorious for a weak spot that needs beefed up by welding.
If you are really serious about beefing up the power ... Today may just be your lucky day. I have a Rockwell JLO twin 399cc (professionally rebuilt 7/2000) that I'm pulling out of my Attex and replacing with a 16HP 4 stroke. E-mail me at namelrab@sgi.net and let's see if we can make a deal.
