drsam told me his was an egocrusher, i got one of his, i went out and found some hils i have climbed with pasengers were only 30* - 33*
not what i called gas tank kissing steep but i did think thay were steeper than that,
SO HOW ABOUT IT, CAN'T WE ALL "GET THE TECH" AND POST TRUE ANGLES,it will make things more interesting won't it,if you cant find one try e-mailing drsam@ix.netcom.com he has plenty of them and there perfict for the job,

OK let me be the first to post my ego crushing discovery.
I took my inclinometer out expecting to have no trouble going up a 45* hill
Actually I was hoping to post that I did a 60* hill.

Much to my surprise and disappointment I found out this.
A 20 degree is a nice hill, 25 degree is steep, I don't believe it will go up
a 30 degree grade and I am to apprehensive to try it.

Maybe with a lot of speed you could do a 30 degree
but, I would think it would go over backwards, 45 degree has to be
impossible.
This was what I came back with on that truthful day.

David since has gone up a 33* so I guess that means he has bigger ones then I do.
Or at least a lot more experience and a better feel for the machine.
I was driving my Max 4
next I want to take out my Hustler which has better hill climbing performance
( or at least I think so) What do you guys think?
Sam

I looked at a hill that was being surveyed by a land survey crew. The guy there in charge told me the hill was 49.38 degrees. Man, there's no way I would try it in my conquest. With a naked eye, I would have guess more like 65 to 70 degrees. I would have to seriously doubt anyone who claims they've climbed greater than 45 degrees.

I f you have the right surface even a 60 degree is possible, we used to climb granite rock faces that were too steep to walk up with our jeeps, If in doubt just look up some of the trails in Moab Utah That surface was like 40 grit sandpaper

aaaah! but here is what were asking, get an acurat meeter, climb and then meashure, and only then bother us with how many* if people beleave 60* is done randemly by all sombody will get hurt trying, and for what, let's not guess or aproximate something this simple, also a tape meashure too as the more details the better, we can all get an idea of the profile of the hill climbed, for instance my favoret climb meshurd out to 30' @20* at the base then 30* to 33* along a 123' strech to the top, its a clay sufice with lots of small loose stones and a little light brush & grass for fiber, its inconsistant and too tretcherost to decend, did i forget to mention the deep ruts at the bottem?well 6x6 vehicls tend to run away and careen out of control down steep long loose grades like this, its shure fun to climb but then you wonder why you did it!LOL

Does anyone know at what angle the Briggs 18HP engine will start to starve for fuel? The engine is in an Argo Bigfoot.

We just measured a small hill around us, at a neat 62 degrees. It looks a bit vertical to try, but try we must. A friends Max2 made a valliant effort but mostly spun it's tires until it was backed down. No luck. I think Jim had to change his pants after trying, I wasn't up to it on a Max. I however DID give it a go on my Suzuki quad runner, with a short headstart since I knew traction wouldn't make it there. I made it on speed and enertia alone, but it was losing power on it and if it didn't inch over the top, I would have been tumbling down with it. On traction alone, no chance. It felt like I was going vertical.

I have an ARGO Bigfoot. Living in the Pocono's of PA there are plenty of hills and inclines on my property. I bought a Dual angle clinometer we call the "rolly polly gauge" It will read up to 45 degree angles. I have had it to 35 and would not want to go any more than that. 30 Degrees side to side is also plenty..

i bought a clinometer and installed it today.it reads pitch and roll. i was going over some snow banks before and i thought they were extreamly steep. well today i went out after installing my meter and the bank was only 25*. so i tried going up another bank that i was scared to try before. i made it up it was 35*. it was scary i thought i was going straight up. i really find it hard to believe people are going up or down more that 45* hills.

THERE YOU GO NEWMAX, SOME FOLKS CLAIM 60* BUT UNTILL THEY USE A REAL METER ITS ALL HYPE,
PLENTY OF MY OLD FAVORETS TURNED OUT TO BE 33*
THE ONLY ONE LEFT TO MEASHUR IS THE STEEPEST OLD PLACE I USED TO CLIMB BUT NEW PROPERTY OWNERS WILL NOT LET ANYONE IN THERE, "WRATS"

I've got a new Max IV with the 23 hp and just went up a hill that I am guessing 30%, when it started bogging down(loose rock), i turned one way and basically crabbed-walked it up a bit and then it picked up speed enough to get up. I'll go up and try to get the true angle. I don't see 60% being a possibility.

Scott, If you had trouble on a 30 percent grade, something is wrong with your machine or your operator skills. 100 percent is 45 degrees. My guess is that you inadvertantly are pulling the laterals back as you climb (this is a natural action until you earn to force yourself to push them forward) and your tranny bands are just partially engaged.

You might need some belt dressing on your drive belt to ensure good performance always and to increase the life of your belt.

If your drive belt isn't slipping and if your tranny is fully engaged, the machine should be able to climb most anything where it can get traction. On natural terrain too steep to climb, your tires should break loose and spin digging holes. The 23 HP engine should never power out or bog down.

I have a LTV Areospace KID. The technical data says that it can climb a 70 degree incline. http://www.route6x6.com/museum/kid/kid.html I have climbed some steep hills and have climbed straight up creek banks. It can climb serious inclines with one exception, the carb will starve on a long, steep incline. I have experienced this, and with no brakes and no power to run the hydraulic motors, it is a scary descent.

I'm really surprised that ALL aatv's don't come equipped with "angle gauges". One on the dash and one on the side would tell someone if their pushin' their luck!!

Even better would be some type of floating ball (similar to the compass ball all our dads had on their windshields!). A white "spot" would be visible on top of the ball. If the spot disappears in any direction, behind a fixed curved cover, your out of the safety zone.

Seems simple to me. I hope the factories keep an eye on this site and consider this suggestion.

ALSO... design some kind of knee pads on the dash for steep descents! I've been forced against the handles (handles shoved forward) a few times and it's pretty scary not havin' brakes when it happens. If my knees were braced, there'd be no problem.
