I have seen discussed here that some of you using come-a-longs instead of a winch to get yourself out when you are stuck. Has any one tried a block and tackle or pulley outfit? It looks like a bit more convenient to use since it has more rope on it. Thanks in advance. Ron Minor |

I've used a chain hoist to pull a pickup out of a mudhole after snapping a drive axle. I would have much preferred a steel cable come a long like I now carry in my 6x6. The driving chain (the one you pull on) was constantly getting caught up in the load chain, I don't like using chain falls on the vertical.
I carry a come a long ($14 from harbor freight) and a couple of tow straps, I doubt I would need to hook up more than once, unless it was a break down. I seldom get so far into a bad situation that one hook up won't get me back to Terra-firma.

I carry a product called a rope a long. I can use as long a piece of as rope as i need. I have used it on two occasions and it worked well. Just thought you would like the info. I own a conquest so the pulling weight is also a factor to me. |

Thanks to this information bank and you guys I am "hopefully"making the correct choices.I had a T1500 winch and it was suggested via many of you to potentially not be adequate enough.I returned it and purchased the U2500 Warn,quite a step up I believe.Well my question is There is a black plate ,according to instruction,to be mounted"sandwiched" between winch housing and body mounting.Is this plate necessary?It also has an opening on the end,I believe it is a feeder for the cable.I want to mount it to the front of my Max II which is on about a 30-45degree angle.I am having a large rear plate and a front plate made from a welder friend for mounting.Is it imperitive to mount this winch flat,utilizing the cable feeder?Or can this winch be mounted flat on the angle of the front of the Max ???Would like to do this only once and safely so any information I recieve will be greatly appreciated.I have contacted the company but have not heard from them as yet.

What exactly is a rope a long? Is it like a block and tackle? Do you know if Harbor Freight carries them? I just bought 50ft of 3/8" nylon rope and used that with the come a long. It worked ok to get me unstuck (is that a word?)Anyway the nylon seemed to streach a lot. I bought the nylon because it had the highest working strenth. I didn't want to carry around 50ft of chain because of the weight. |

I hate to tell you to spend more, but a roller fairlead would be a better idea than the flat plate with a hole in it to feed the cable through. Even though the winch should get minimal use in pulling yourself out, it would save the cable when you are winching out all of those quads, and besides, what is another $40.00. It also would allow you to mount the winch at any angle. |

Jerry good choice on buying the Warn 2500. A roller fairlead is a very good idea. After using the winch a few times you will see just how much you need it. You do need to mount the winch so that the rollers point strait forward and not at an upwards angle. I think Argo may have a good winch mount for this or make your own. You need a good backing plate behind the winch and plastic or the bolts will just pull through the plastic. Ernie (lucky45) has a good pic of his winch set up on his profile.
Pay for your winch by charging $5 to every quad you pull out!
