See my reply to your first post. If I would have read this one before, I would have known it was for a Max II. Here is a starter pic. Maybe I can get out to the shop over the weekend and get some rough measurements cause right now the plow is on my machine. What are you going to use for a blade? |

I believe I may have a set of the body plates laying around but wont be able to find them till the snow melts off some. It looks like freaken Alaska out here. They may have been on a machine I sold I cant remember. They basically bolt around the middle and front axle (25" centers) and have a pin welded on them with a hole in it for a spring pin. Seems like their about 3" wide and 1/8" thick steel plates with about a ¾ pin. |

hey thanx for the pic that is a great help. is that something that you made? if so where did you get the balde? i was gonna order one from warn for 150.00 for just the plow, and customize everything else. that is for a argo right? the problem that im having is that i have not seen one for a max. the bolts are inset from the body, so it would have to bend in than out to clear the body, and the is only gonna weeken it. well i hope that you have more information that is helpful for me |

R.J.roe, The picture is of a factory plow from RI for the Max. I believe that RI uses a blade made by Cycle Country in Iowa and then RI makes everything else to attach it. Blades made for 4 wheelers are pretty common from Warn, Cycle Country, Swisher and Moose. If you check out the various brands you will see that some have thick gussets, some have thin gussets and some have none at all. The gauge of the blade steel varies by manufacture and also the thickness of the wear bar. Moose plows seem to be more stout than the others IMO. I’m a pretty good at metal fab and a few years back, I was going to do the same as you and fabricate my own plow set up. I had the same problem and could not get an idea how the factory Max plow was mounted. I found a couple of home made set ups and did not like the way they were built. I did not need a snow plow for my Max because I have several other plowing machines so I poked along and tried out a couple of ideas just for fun. The idea was to build it cheap but functional. I was in no hurry. A deal came my way I was able to get a NOS RI plow for ¼ the cost of a new plow from RI. IMO, RI plows are way overpriced to begin with and then you have additional freight costs. I bought it and put it on. I’ll try and get to the shop this weekend with the measuring stick and get you some dimensions. Here are a couple pics of the factory frame and mounts.

I can't open the file. What program application is used to create this file? Maybe I can find a shareware application on the internet that will open it. |

took my cardboard template to the local metal fabricator today. i decided to change the thickness from 1/8 to 1/4, and made the A frame pin 3/4 and not 11/16. wanted to make sure that it would hold up. one thing that is for sure, it is gonna be cheaper than RI. they are gonna be 60.00 for the both of them, that is a deal! |

If you go 1/4 thick, you will have to replace the threaded studs for longer ones that go through the flanges in order to secure the new brackets. With standard 1/8 thick, the lock nuts go on just to the right depth. Having to replace the studs just for the mounts to go on is a pain unless you are going to do other flange work. You may also lose the seal effectiveness when you pull out the studs. IMO I guess $60.00 could be a deal for 1/4 depending where you go but for me that is 40 bucks too much for steel and the work he is going to do. There is no flexing in the 1/8 bracket that bolts onto the flange studs. 1/8 seems pretty strong to me since it gets strength from the angle at the bottom side. Assuming you don't have access to a metal break to angle the steel, you could have your guy sell you the steel and put it on his press break, cut to the dimensions you need. Using your template, you can scribe the steel for the area to be cut out to go over the axles, cut that out with a saw and use a drill to make your holes. Saves $$$ for other stuff lol. Take pictures please. We like pictures! |

Is your guy doing powder coat finishing for that price too? Then maybe it's worth the additional cash. |

well i thought that i was geting a deal because the factory ones from RI are 110.00 without shipping. i went with 1/4" without the 40 bend. just as soon as i get them back i will get pic. my only other concern is that the plow will raise up enough without interfearing with the front axel. but im sure that it will all come together in the end. i will keep ya updated |

Compared to the RI price, you are getting a deal. What I meant is that I think your guy is getting top price for his 1/4" steel or he has a high shop labor rate. If you aren't putting the angle bend in the steel, then using 1/4" might be wise. Two reasons IMO that RI put the bend in is 1) it's cheaper to use 1/8" steel and the angle makes the bracket stronger than w/o the angle and 2) the angle helps prevent ride up of the A-frame onto the axle. Since you will not have the angle on the bracket bottom you may want to weld on some steel tabs to prevent contact with the axle. I suggest that you make the brackets flush with the tub bottom because if you leave the brackets on all year it reduces ground clearance when playing in the rough or soft stuff. As far as axle clearance, the A-frame that I expect you are making to attatch to the pins on your new bracket shound be long enough and wide enough to allow it to clear the bottom of the tub. The A-frame pivots on the pins.

the plates are exactly 12" so that puts it right at the bottom of the tub. i dont think that i will have a problem with thr studs not being long enough, im going to remove factory nut and replace it with a nut that is thiner, and use the factory nut to hold on the bracket. is there a bend in the plow frame directly under the front axel? is the plow frame made of c channel, or is it square stock? i believe that either would work. with the plow that im gonna use im sure that it will need some modification. i know that im probably asking alot of questions that i will be able to answer for my self once i get further in the build. but thankyou for all advice. rj |

Well, there is a bend in the frame but not under the axle. If layed out flat on a floor, the bend is upwards and more near the cross arm that connects the legs of the "A". Most of the A frame is channel, the extended legs of the "A" behind the connector piece is angle steel. The extended legs attach to the pins on the brackets. I thought I sent you this picture, if not, here it is again. The frame in the picture is shown upside down so you should be able to see the welds. On the end of the extended bracket (right side of picture) the light colored dot is the hole that fits onto the pin welded to the brackets that fit over the axles. Why are you making the brackets 12" wide? Unless I am missing something here, that seems to be a lot more than is needed. Here are some pics of a homemade plow mount, frame and blade that I happen to see a couple of years ago. I don't like the way the builder made his brackets and pivot point for the frame but he solved the concern of the plow hitting the tub when the blade is raised up. Using a longer A frame legs with an upward angle bend would have solved the problem. We are supposed to get up to 18" snow tonight thru Sunday. It's accumulating at a pretty good rate right now and the wind gusts are high. If the Max can't handle it, I guess I might have to put the blower on the big tractor.Lol.

they are gonna be 6"x 29 3/4". that must have been a typo on my part. the last snow storm that we got, we got about 14"-18", but the max kept going. that plow bracket in the pic, looks like something that is waiting to fail. i thought about that plate being too thick for the flange bolts. if by chance i cant get it to work i will mill those holes down to 1/8". we are gonna get a ice storm sunday, ill see how well the max goes in that. after i get the plow project done im gonna look at building a hard top. well i hope that you make out good in the storm with your max! thankyou for the pics. rj |

Thanks R.J., pic, is fine. I moved it to another file and can make it any size I want. Yours is designed to come down over the axle as compared to going up from the bottom with the lip. I think it should work fine. send us a pic. of you plowing when you get the plow mounted. W.Philip |

ok i got the plow done for the most part today, all that i need to do now is get a winch. i can mount the plow up just for a picture, than i will post it. all that i have in to the project is- 60.00 for fabricated brackets, 75.00 for the plow. and a viper or venom winch 100.00 or so on e bay. after this project im going to focus on fabricating a hard top for the max II, wich i have thought about, and have a plan of atack with hinged doors. |

Good work R,J. I hear that a top is better when snow is blowing around and you're plowing. Hope you get the winch in time, in case we get one more snow as March leaves us. What keeps the A frame from coming off of the 3/4" pins on your bracket? W. Philip |

well i have a soft top that was on the machine when i got it but it is shot, it did the job this winter but not for the next. so that is one more thing that i hope to get done before winter. the a frame is made wider than the machine so once one side is pined, you have to apply a small amout of pressure to put in the other pin in along with a flat washer, so the up and down movement dosent wear out the pin. |
