I have an 8x8 ARGO MAGNUM which is finally down at the plant for repairs that have been needing to be done for years now- however, while at the cottage this past weekend, I was using someone else's ARGO MAGNUM 6x6 and took it up to the development that Dad's working on to where the new road was just cleared. I went with two other friends and I was doing some comparing of the 8x8 vs. 6x6 and it got me thinking. I have to admit, the 6x6 was a blast and its so much smaller and more fun to boot around in. I don't want to trade my big ARGO for that but at the same time, we don't really need an ARGO at all, but we are holding on to it till I can buy it from my Dad (whenever that will be is the question) The guy that lent me his 6x6 is selling it this summer and its in incredable shape for a vehicle that has over 2000 hours on the meter- actually, 2680 to be exact and it runs so much better than my ARGO with 685 hours on it. It also has a front and back winch, re-enforced back end, windshield, top and tires with treds on them. It was used as a work vehicle but never abused and he used to be an ARGO dealer so its in great shape and maintained to the letter. What would some of you do in this case. I have never considered a 6x6 till this past weekend but now I am considering it more and more. |

David, I enjoy our 6x6 very much, however we have 3 kids, and the rear seating sucks. I installed narrow tractor seats to help, but sitting sideways while lurching for uneven ground does get tiresome. I am now considering a narrow bench seat. So, the key thing to me would be to consider what type of driving you plan to do. If it is just you and a buddy, then by all means. But if 3-4 is the norm, then stick with the 8x8. |

David - I started with a 6x6 Vangaurd2 and loved it. When it got stolen, I replaced it with an 8x8 Response. The bigger machine does give a better ride, but I miss the 6 wheeler. Icater is right, though, if you have more than two people regularly the 6x6 is just too small. |

David, I saw on an earlier thread that geek(?) sent you the design for putting a bench in the back his Argo. I tried to email but his link is dead. Do you happen to have that? I have some ideas as to what I want to do, but was curious as to what he has done.

Thanks for the responses- While I can't picture getting rid of the 8x8, I do like the idea of a 6x6 for a change, however, I do use the 8x8 as a work vehicle occasionally around the cottage and around Dad's developments when they need another workhorse. Last summer we cleared a lot of brush from our property and we used the ARGO to pull the fully overloaded trailer from off the sand pit by the water and out to the road where we swapped the ARGO for the van. It worked hard that week and pulled heavier loads in the trailer than I thought it could and on sand. A few times we loaded both the ARGO and trailer with brush and took it out and it never complained and I couldn't have done that with the 6x6 cause their isn't enough room in the back.
Another question: The 6x6 I was using (I have pics and when they are developed I will post) had a rear winch- a very, very strong one (4500 superwinch or 3500 superwinch-can't remember which) but the back end was re-enforced with a piece of metal or steel from the top of the rear wall down to the hitch to support the back. Can a rear winch be added to an 8x8? I have been considering one for a while (not as strong as that one but enough to pull me out) but never really looked into it. |

Hey Argomag my dad and I own a Argo 8x8 Conquest and we just simply take the winch from the front to the rear.It is a superwinch and we just put it on a draw bar and move it to the rear receiver.We have quick disconnects at the front and the rear of the Conquest to plug into.We also use the rear connection for power for our trolling motor.We use the remote winch control for the forward and aft controls and a seperate control for turning.I found the trolling motor at a flee market for $15 and it works great.As I have written before if you do this you might want to think about putting in some type of selector so you don't burn a winch out like we did it was an expensive lesson.We also just designed an arm to carry our 10 ft. dock sections out into the water.The winch is moved to the back of the argo and the arm is about 4ft. high and about 2ft. out with a cable guide on the end.Have not tried it yet but it should work great we should also be able to lift the boat hoists in the air to put the wheels on so we can tow them out into the water with the argo.Email me if you want and I can send some pictures.

I would suspect a 3500/4500 would kill the battery on the Argo in know time. While I am sure you can mount it via the frame, I suggest you save your money and buy a 4 ton come-a-long at Princess Auto. For the amount of times winches overall get used, they are an expensive asset. A come-a-long with extra chain or cable, will easily haul out an Argo, plus not be limited to the angle of pull. With a choker chain it can do double duty of hauling a fallen tree out of the way (if it can't be ridden over).
So David, now that I've answered some of your questions, how about mine? Do you have the plans for putting a bench seat in the back of a Bigfoot?

I would imagine it would really depend on how much you would be using your winch. Where I go, I have 56 acres of patented mining properties, I am using my front or rear winches on my ATV's almost every day for moving boulders when I'm mining. For me, a come-a-long would be a lot of extra work and one big pain in the butt. Myself, I couldn't do without winches, at 57 years old, I can't move those huge boulders by hand anymore. |
