Yes I have to agree I think the two-strokes would be faster. Why doesn't Max make a two-stroker anymore?

I have a Max IV with a 484 2 stroke. I just bought it but haven't had it running yet but what I've heard so far about the 440, I like what I hear. There is a gas leak somewhere in the gas tank area and it may be where they put a new gas line hose in. So how do you think the 484 is going to run... Dave

Dave: I think you will need a rollbar a good 5 point harness and maybe a g-suit!!!!!! And make sure your throttle return spring is in very good shape before you blast off!!!!!!

I have a max IV with the 484 in it, I got it to replace a 440 that the machine came with,so far I have noticwed that the motor mount isn't up to the task as the person I GOT IT FROM HAD ALREADY HAD TO REINFORCE IT I welded it back together and added more gussets. If everything wasn't solid ice around here I think it would wheely. it is fast.

I like what I hear on the 2 strokes and their performance. I'd like to thank you all for your response as everyone has been a big help. I have never owned or rode in an ATV or AATV so this Max IV with the 484 is going to be interesting. Thanks again. Dave

Found the gas leak in my 87 Max IV. There's a small pinhole leak in the front right side of the metal gas tank. I am going to replace it. Any suggestions? Dave

Dave, before you buy a new tank, I would try putting a roofing screw (with neoprene washer) in the hole. JB weld would probably fix it too. Metal tanks can be welded by experts (need to make sure all the gas fumes are out). The new plastic tank will fit perfectly and be a real easy switch.

I'm still curious to the year of your machine - what is the serial number?

Fred, I somehow keep on messing up on the year of my Max IV. See what happens when you get old. The serial # is 5999. I contacted the Max headquarters in Buffalo NY and they said it was a 1978 model. I had my brother call up first to get the info on it which I think he misunderstood the year. It does look to be around 20 years old but I still think it is in very good condition. It does have the solid axles. I'm going to check all the bearings shortly.

I want to replace the gas tank as it's rusted in a few spots and it was dirty when I washed it out with water. I would rather replace it which I would be fixing it right the first time. Can you tell me how much a plastic replacement tank is and do I have to order it from Buffalo NY RI.

I have used JB weld on a cracked carburetor fuel bowl on a tractor which worked just fine. Thank you very much for your help and I believe you had sent me a message previously. I'm new to these forums so please bare with me. Thanks again. Dave

Dave, Appreciate the info on the model year - not that it really matters, but I try to be accurate in my statements (I feel better when I pass on the right information). No doubt in my mind that your Max can be in good condition - these thing last a long, long time if they are given a reasonable amount of care.

A new plastic tank shipped from RI (you can call direct or talk to any dealer) will cost about $120 plus shipping. You should probably check with Richard (this site's web master) at his Richard's Relics site first as he might have a good used one.

You might check in the ads for dunebuggies, a tank of similar if not identical size can be had with the same center fill for about $80

I have a pre 9070 ATTEX ST/300/D. It has been converted to a 440cc Yamaha 2cyl 2 stroke snowmobile motor and it does do wheelies, with two people on it. The body is in great shape but it being so old I have been spending alot of time on debugging it. I have to make almost everything I break. I'm 23 years old and LOVE my 6x6. Not only for the fact that virtualy nobody around here knows what it is. I like the fabrication part of it but I only get about an hour of riding before something else breaks. The big 2 stroke is incredably fast and snappy. I also know that these things are in no way shape or form made to go this fast. Also on the motor mount thing I had the same problem. I used a set of dodge slant-6 mounts and havent had a problem sence. Now its all chains bearings and adjusting and making new brake pads for it. I have been thinking of going to a T-20 trans. Would the power destroy that aswell? I like to make things but to make the pads you kill holesaws and grinder wheels like mad. Also am I the only person that has an old ATTEX that still rides it?
