I am considering buying an 8x8 Argo with this engine. It is an 87 model and has mechanical brakes. Is this engine powerful enough? I intend on putting tracks on it. The machine is in great shape and the price is OK. Any suggestions?

I would get more than a 16 horse for an 8x8 with tracks. If you can get the price down, you can spring for a bigger 4 cycle.

Mark,
the motor, if running properly is enough for the machine with the runnamuck tires. Unfortunatly, with tracks on it you are going to lose alot of power. when in deep snow you will probably be in low range. I would swap a 23 b&s in the machine. 2 cylynders plus 7 more hp. and alot more torque.

the old oh160 will do what you need as long as you dont run super tracks on it . your weak liks are going to be the the frame and the manual brakes. the brakes wont hold up to tracks for long . what body style is it ? i have had three 8s one with a oh160 and two with kohlers

Thanks for your advice. I have decided to look for another Argo. I have found an 89 Magnum with the 18 hp Kohler and hydraulic brakes. I am considering buying this machine.

Teh ARGO MAGNUM IS POWERFUL AND WILL RUN TRACKS FINE> IT slows down a bit but as long as the breaks work, you will have little problem.
