I just got a 95 MaxII 16 hp B&S. I love it and its top speed isnt that bad. But I have a warrior to go fast on ( sold my banshee :0( ). I live in Eastern Ky. and we have alot nasty hills Im used to hitting them fast and hard. Im learning to drive my Max II decent now had it a week . I ve went up some decent hills to pactice on I hit them fast and seems like it slows down alot afraid I run out of torque on a long hill ,Im used to down shifting and kepping rpms up. also im a big guy about 300 lb . Is it better to go slow from the start on a nasty hill? do I need a bigger hp engine? also I added 2 100 watt lights to my Max they burn bright will the charging system handle them ? I have lots of ?s . but Love my Max II and so do my 2 boys Zachery 3 and Austin 6 I sit in middle and ride them both.
P.S. I dont plan on taking them up nasty hills.

the slower you go the more power is put to the wheels.it may seem like it slows down to a crawl but thats how your transmission works.as you slow down the pulleys change in effect giving you a lower gear ratio. more power less speed.

Well I'm just getting my kennel started. Last year I bought 2 Beagles, Brinskys run-em-over TANK pups from Dave Fisher in Pa. and I just got a female pup the other day from my buddy out of OLE BILL .My pups started running at 7 months. thats what I got my max to rabbit and deer hunt with.I also have a blue tick beagle she started running at 10 months. and I have Spot the beagle trainer he is old but good, med slow jump dog.I love to talk hounds and atvs.
Ps: sorry no dogs for sell yet turned down $350.00 for one of my tank pups other day.

mr. tinker what about big hills? I take my warrior up stuff that 4x4s wont try. esp alot of short straight up ones that send ya flying at top. also what about belt slipping will the drive belt slip if you put motor under a big load like donunts? also will a loose chain make my max pull to the right?
LOVE MY MAX JUST DONT KNOW ITS LIMITS YET... if there are any.

Donnie, Try your hills slow. The max with the T-20 has high torque at low RPM. If your belt should slip, use belt dressing (or replace belt if too narrow). I use belt dressing regularly, just like oil and gasoline. Belts last longer and you always get full performance.

The Max might not go the same places that machines that use momentum get to directly, but once you know how to drive it, you will go places with your max that nothing else will get to. You have very good traction and should be able to stop mid hill and restart (uphill). Your 300 lbs is just right for the max, just remember that balance is important and be ready to put your weight over the tires that need it. 16 Hp should serve you well (you will drop in speed a little going up and over 5000 feet elevation you will notice a little power reduction). The first Vanguard engines were 12 HP and they performed adequately for most situations.

Your pulling is probably a difference in pressure in your tires. Run them at 2 3/4 or 3 PSI and 1/4 PSI difference is a big difference for a low pressure tire.

Your Eninge puts out 16 amps so you are pushing it to use two 100 watt lights. At least you have a recoil starter if the juice runs out.

If you are going to use it hard and fast, keep up on the maintenance and plan on some repairs. If you will use it slow and easy, it will last a lot longer.

Fred, I tried my max on a decent hill today thought I was going to get killed lol, I climbed 2 smaller hills first that I had no prob with, then a 45 FT hill thats starts easy then gets up to prob 40 degrees on last 9 ft or so I got stuck with front wheels right at the top. I held gas wide,open belt was slipping i think, I could hear it and started to smell like it was getting hot. I didnt roll backwards any, I started to jump lol and I wiggled the sticks alittle by accident and I guess the belt took hold cause then it ate it up pulled out like it was a dozer. thats the 2nd time that has happend to me. Right when I get to the steep part it slips I guess . the guy I got the max from said he just put a new belt on it.
Ill put some belt dressing on it. can I tighten the belt ? my run off manual doesnt say. although when I put it in fw gear it seams to pull out as soon as I give it the gas. also whats the best way to back off a steep hill if you dont make it? I let off gas the first time belt sliped rolled back a foot and shot the gas to it and front wheels came off the ground then I feathered the gas and went right on up. that was on a smaller hill prob 30 degrees.
still love my max I got to try it in some serious mud that baby ate it up.

You are probably unknowingly pulling back on the sticks when you are going up hills. Only a little bit will cause the tranny to slip and you won't get full power. PUSH the sticks forward to make sure the tranny bands are engauged.
When I back down a hill, I used the throttle to control it. This takes skill and you could flip over or lose control if you are unexperienced.
I rode with a lot of quads this weekend at Turkey Bay, including some big 4x4s. My Max was unstoppable and laid the smack down on those quads. When six wheels are rockin' there's just no stoppin'.

Donnie, I agree with Brandon that you probably do not have the sticks all the way forward allowing your tranny bands to be only partially engaged. Do try the belt dressing though! The only way to adjust the belt is to move the motor - I do not think that is necessary. Having the correct belt is important and not all swaps are with a belt that fits. I really think engagement of the tranny is your problem. Pulling the sticks back just part way is how to stop and hold yourself on a hill.

To back off a hill, I pull the sticks into neutral and allow the machine to roll back (don't shift into reverse unless you have dug holes and the machine will not roll back on its own and if you do shift into reverse, please go clear to the bottom before you shift back into forward) using the throttle as Brandon indicated to control your speed backward. If you get in a bind, pulling the sticks all the way back engages the tranny brake and you can ride the brake all the way down. Sounds as though you just need a few more hours behind the sticks.

they look like sticks to me ......lol And I do need more hrs in my max. but hey Im loveing it more and more as I learn. Now if I could only think of a good excuse so I dont have to work tommarow, I could get in some much needed practice ... lol my grass is a foot high now I need a mowing attachment lol . I have a riding mower but its not the same lol.
