I'VE JUST RECEIVED AN E-MAIL FROM RAMONA GRIFFIN. THE HUMPHREY'S VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT RIDE IN NEW YORK WILL BE HELD ON THE WEEKEND OF JULY 20 & 21, 2002. IT HAD TO BE CHANGED FROM THE FIRST WEEK OF AUGUST DUE TO CONFLICTS.
By bigkodiak on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
Thanks for the heads up so that I can change my vacation time at work witout a conflict.

Lets have a rollcall. Who is planning to go to the July Humphrey's Volunteer Fire Department run in New York? We plan to at this time. The only thing to stop us would be Roger's employer. At this time it looks good.
By Russell Lee (Bigkodiak) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
I will be there. I have my vacation time all lined up. The only thing will hold me up will be broken down machine or truck.

Change in road directions- Due to the removal of the bridge on Humphrey Road an alternate route will be needed for everyone coming from the north. I suggest this: Route 219 south through Ellicottville into Great Valley. At the red flashing light in Great Valley TURN RIGHT (following 219 south). Pass Eddies Restaurant and the hardware store, watch for a car dealer on your left. After the car dealer turn left on to PETH Rd. Peth Rd. will merge with Humphrey Rd. and take you straight to the Fire Hall, which will be on your right. It is about six miles from the car dealer to the Fire Hall.

Well it is less than two weeks till the 2002 Jamboree. The trail is shaping up well , we have been up there working on it pretty regular. That very steep hill with the loose rocks just before Ramonas mud hole is still in the course but it is now optional. We did a bit of rearranging, and added a loop over to what we call the Bear Caves. This trail has never been used before and features some freshly logged trails. If I have time I plan to mark out a course for the night rides with a different color arrow for those who get separated from the pack.
Lets hear who is coming and if you have any suggestions or questions, now would be a good time for them.
I will be doing a video again this year, I had to take last year off.
Our raffle for the new Max11 will be drawn on Sunday evening.
For those coming down from the north , note the road detour above. See you there!

John, I received your video of the Attica ride and it was GREAT!!!!! Thank you so much for coming to our ride and giving us something so nice to remember the good times. I will be leaving here thursday afternoon. See you in a week. Matt

Hey gang, I should be getting there between 4-6 pm on friday 7/19, John, Matt, Russ, what time are you guys arriving there? Lets try to get the same camp spot as last year,
By EJ Warden on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
John,
Just read your post about the "very steep hill with the loose rocks". I remember it well, that is where we flipped over backwards in my Attex during the spring run. Even though you are making it optional, we have to try it again. Also, we will be coming down from Rochester area (Bristol)next weekend. We will be coming down the Southern Tier Expressway. Is it best to go from the Salamanca exit north on Rt.219, or from Olean and take Co. Rd. 19 to Chapel hill? Where is the bridge out? See you soon. Oh yeah, are trolling motors allowed in the Sunday races?

JUST CANT RESIST,WE WILL BE BRINGING UP THE REAR IN MATTS HUMPHRY CARAVAN,HOPE I CAN KEEP UP,TWO MAYBE THREE IN OUR PARTY.NEW TIRES ON TRAILER,TUNEUP ON THE 1TON,I THINK WHERE GOOD TO GO!!!
By david berger (Davidrrrd) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
i couldent beleave it when i saw that hill on johns video!
i went up it without trouble with my sick old dog!
i should loan megan one of my cameras, LOL
By John Schwab (Johnschwab) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
EJ The missing bridge will only affect people coming down from the north, your routes are fine. It is better to take the expressway right to 219 north,it is a little longer but much better roads.
The hill that you had your "incident" on is not the one I am referring to, the hill that is now optional had a lot of loose rocks on it. Many experienced riders had trouble there, keep in mind all the rain we had hours before the event began. The machines that did the best on that hill that day were the machines that did not have excessive power to spin the wheels, like mine.
As to the trolling motor question, please bring something larger, I have always wanted to water-ski in the swamp!

Glad to hear that you are coming. Will Tom be joining you? I will probably be there mid day on Friday. I have not heard from Geru and Matt yet but I know that they both will be bringing extra folks along with them so they may be running late.
Geru and Matt
If you are going to arrive later on Friday let me know how much space you all need and we can hold it. TJ is supposed to be there but I don't know how. His wife just gave birth to a little girl on Monday the 8th.

John,
You must be talking about the hill that everyone had some trouble going up. I made it up on (barely) on the first try, but that was before everyone else got there, so it wasn't torn up. We sat at the top and waited for the rest of the pack because we knew it was going to get interesting. As for the waterskiing in the swamp, if I could figure out how the water jet propulsion system on the "Land-Tamer" six-wheelers was set-up, I would give you a pull. Wouldn't it be great to throw a big rooster-tail
and zip through the water?

Humphrey Update- We worked on the trails again today. We were able to complete the loop to the Bear Caves, great lunch break spot. This trail has never been used on any dice run before. In fact some of it is virgin trail, just cleared today, it is very shady and will be pretty slick should we get some rain before the event. We were able to increase the total length of the trail by about three miles of tight woods trail. The man with the dozer is supposed to make the mud pit tomorrow for the rodeo. It is very dry now but thunderstorms are predicted for thurs and fri, do a rain dance if you know one. We are still stuck using that section of road at the beginning and end but the trail itself is much better.
EJ- Now it sounds like we are talking about the same hill. That one will be optional, I plan to spend some time there with the videocamera.
See You all there!! It's going to be fun

OK, here's the question all want to know. Who was the lucky winner of the MAX?
Russ
By John Schwab (Johnschwab) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
Well another Humphrey Jamboree is in the history books, and what a great time it was.
The Max 11 raffle was won by a Mr, Ron Rutan of Waretown NJ.
All these numbers are estimates:
Friday night ride-53 AATVs
Saturday Dice Run-139 registrations 103 AATVs
Saturday night ride-47 AATVs
2 Rollovers in Ramonas mudhole
1 Rollover in the rodeo mud pit
1 Rollover on the new massive "speed bumps"
2500 traumatized frogs in the swamp
100 square feet of missing bark on the Bear Caves trail
1 Ribits Riders Club President dropped in the swamp by RI employee (captured on video)
1 RI employee wrestled in mud by another RI employee (maybe ex-employee now)
0 Griffin family machines towed out of woods
2 lbs of peanuts eaten at saturday campfire
22 lbs of peanuts thrown at saturday campfire
150 jello shots- self-explanatory
0 rain during event
46 lost riders on saturday night ride(out of 47)
All-in-all a really great weekend
It was my intention to mark the night run trail with bright green arrows, but was unable to get that accomplished in time for the event. Hopefully the folks that were "lost" still had a good time. I will really try to get that done next year.
The Max11 raffle got off to a slow start but managed to finish in the black. Thank you to all who participated.
Over all the event finished well financially, so that helps insure that we will have a 6th Jamboree.
Some different dates have been discussed for the next Jamboree, as soon as we make it official I will publish it here.
Please feel free to offer feedback on the event. We would like to hear your ideas and comments so that we can make the event better( no, the rock-trail will not fit in there)
Humphrey Fire Co. president John Lockwood and the community of Humphrey thank everyone for attending our fund-raising events.
Now lets hear your thoughts...
By Steven A. Makitra (Slammy) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
Yeah, Do I have to come and get it, or are they delivering it? Please let me know. Thanks-Slammy
By David Keeso (Argomag) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
From what I hear from Dave Berger, Humphrey was a huge hit as usual. Hopefully, everyone got home safely and all vehicles are in tact and working.
By David Keeso (Argomag) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
John, Do you have any pictures you can post of the weekend?
By John Schwab (Johnschwab) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
To all who ordered Humphrey Jamboree Videos:I am putting the finishing touches on the master tape and will start duplicating Wednesday. The first copies of the Jamboree Video will be in thursdays mail. They will be sent out in the order that they were signed up for in. This years video is three and one-half hours long and looks real good.

for all of you that didnt attend, let me tell you ,ya missed out.i had a blast.trails tested my endurance and my machine, matts rollover in romonas hole was pretty awsome too!i was the guy knee deep in mud hole reattatching my center wheel.my machines ran perfect at home but failed to live up to expectations there, got to meet some very good people also.it was a trip to remember, also like to thank every one for putting up with myself and dave and everyone that helped us out, thanks
By John Schwab (Johnschwab) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
Mike- Don't feel bad about your equipment problems, the trails at Humphrey will find a weak link even in a new machine. But as you noticed a lot of great people come to this event and if you need help, it is never far away. I was able to get Matts rollover in Ramonas mudhole perfectly on video.
As far as "putting up with you and Dave", we have had lots of different events at Humphrey (horses, quads, dirtbikes) and there is no better behaved crowd than the AATVers. I have met some of the nicest people and despite the tremendous amount of work it takes ,we look forward to the Jamboree. Thank you to everyone for that!!
Dave- I do not have the equipment to post photos but I did make an event video the is three and one-half hours long and sells for $15 delivered to your mailbox
By John Schwab (Johnschwab) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
To all who ordered Humphrey 2002 Videos- The last batch went out in todays mail so they are all in the capable and expedient hands of our postal service. Contact me at jsschwab@localnet.com if there is a problem with your tape. We have had lightning for a week straight here and that in turn led to a lot of power problems.
By John Schwab (Johnschwab) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
To all who attended our Jamboree- Last weekend we worked on the trail taking down all of those trail markers, ribbons and signs and picking up the trash along the trail.
It is my pleasure to say that on 24.3 miles of trail we picked up exactly 3 plastic bottles and 2 cigarette packs!!Thank you to everyone who packed out there own litter and picked up a little extra. It really impresses a landowner to see that the people who are enjoying the use of his donated land care about it. And it really impresses us.
FYI- After the quad events we USED to have it was not uncommon to fill two or three hefty trash bags, and those were only one-day events.
