I have aquired an old MAX 340-T. The unit is similar to the MAX 450, 500, and II models. There is no engine with the unit. I have located a JLO-400 2cycle engine for $400. However, this engine is 10 years old. I also have learned that one can install a Briggs 18hp. The kit from Midwest ATV in St.Louis is $1725, and includes all the necessary parts. My dilemma is what is the best way to go? How reliable is the JLO-400? Is the upgrade to a Briggs overpiced. What engine will give me the most reliable operation.

The BS kit is the best way to go, if money is no object.
Remember you will need a carb and a clutch for both set ups, but at 1700 I guess it should come with free installation!
If you want a BS set up for less money I suggest you contact our Richard Clark
He has most of the parts

also ask richerd if he has other engines, a
484 cc chapperal or kawasakie 440cc are the best engines,
but hundreds of engines might fit,

Find a snowmobile salvage and get a good 400+ cc twostroke for it. My argo has a 440cc Cuyuna in it and has power enough to pull wheelies plus the 9000 rpm redline helps speed.
