I am wanting to know what is involed in swapping a 4 stroke motor into a attex. I have a couple of old briggs engines that i have been considering. I have a cast iron 16hp single cylinder and an 18 horsepower twin briggs( not a vanguard) I would like to have a vanguard but i dont want to invest the money right now. Are either of these good donor motors or am i wasting my time?

shure it'l work,
some had brigs engines,
still more had tachumpsa engines.
yours should work like the techumpsa powerd attex's
you may need to chainge the clutches,
richard clark can help you there,

Sounds like you have two good engines for your machine. Briggs engines are alot more reliable than the original 2 stroke. You will need to find a 4 stroke clutch for your new engine or modify the original with heavier weights so it closes at a lower RPM. I have never done it, but someone on the board should be able to help. My lawnmower sits all winter outside and it fires right up when I need it.

The 16hp would be better more torque.

I have a ATTEX 300 with a 450cc 2cyl 2stroke snowmodile engine and centrifcul clutches. It goes thru $150 of chains in like 2 hours of riding. It ripps masterlinks in half. It eats chains alive. Is there #40 chain that will handle that? Or am I going to have to change it all to belts? I made my own steering pads and am going to have to put a bucket seat, harness, and rool cage in it.

hay dave the #40 chain is nothin but a waste unless grand paw drives it and he dont get too agressive with the machine the #50hd or #50 o ring chain is the best way to go was for me and its not cheap either get the good chain not the farmers supply chain

Thanks hell
some other questions. my attex is a pre 1970 model and i have the origonal engine cover in good condition. anny one want? it dont fit over new motor. on my exposed disk tranny, how hard is it to change the sprocket to something more heavy duity? and what is better, drag blocks or a spring type tensioner? should i change the way the chains run? like running 2 from the tranny to the middle axels and then spread it out from there? i am willing to spend the money to do it right and can do all the work myself. but you gotta understand, this thing is extremely fast. i swear ive gone 55mph without toping it out. it is responsable for 2 concushions from 3 days (and 3 sets of chains)of riding. i greatly appreciate your help and cannot wait to get pics up on this page.

Dave,I have the same problem with my LC440 Scrambler chain. You may be seizing the chain due to very high speeds and not the load. if the new chain goes in lubed and is dry after a few high speed runs and is hot, the chain speed is too high. Over loaded chain will actually bend the pins under the rollers and try to push the side plates off. The chain width will be more when you measure befor and after. If the rollers are tight and the chain length increases the chain is over loaded. If the chain is seized and the chain length does not change, the chain speed is too high. you may also have a combination of both conditions. The condition of the sprockets is also critical. If the chain is loose on part of the sprocket and tight at the point where it exits the sprocket its very easy to over load the chain from worn out sprockets.

well they dont get hot. but i know that i am going to have to change the chain size. is it eazy to change the sprockets on the tranny? and what do you think of changing how the chains are run? im full of ambition on this project and want it done right. was thinking of only changing the sprockets on the wheels and running 2 #40 chains down to the center axels then running #50 or bigger to the front and rear axels. overkill?

skinny, if you have the room to run them it might be the only way you could do it, im not shur that on any if any wther you can chainge the sprokets on the baker hill trany, i havent disesembled them myself and have herd both can and cant.
i think 2 #40 good quality chains to center might be a good thing to try, but im not shure you will have enoph space for aditional 2 sprokets ( set of 4)in order to send power to frount and back,
the #40 come cloase to the hull as it is, #50 sproket will have to be smaller,
anyone out there with a baker hill trany torn down who could clear this up for us?
some bakers were actualy made with the #50 sprokets.
the question is were they totaly specialy made.

dave patterson, this might seem to others a little unorthidox, but you could change over to a 428H motorcycle chain, and save yourself from upgrading to #50 gears and chain.

i seriously thought about a motorcycle chain but that doesnt fix my sprokets on the tranny problem. figuring it out in my brain isent the hard part though. the actual work will be the hard part. im just trying to get asmutch info in my head as possable before i screw annything up.

ok guys hear me out'
i think i can use one chain per side (motorcycle size) with a solid tensioner,(to extend contact on center axle) and a spring tensioner on the slack side. this is the best idea ive got so far.
