ARGO CCW conversion

Route 6x6 Discussion Board: Restoration of older ATV's: ARGO CCW conversion

I have a 1970's (?) ARGO 6x6 with a CCW twin, 2 stroke motor with single HD carb. The distributor told me that it was not the original motor. By looking at the motor mout setup and the air intake, it looks like original. Could this be an original setup?
The motor has never run reliably needing constant carb adjustment. What is a good carb replacement for this motor?
I am considering a motor conversion to a newer oil injected snowmobile motor such as a Polaris 488 twin with twin carbs. These motors are known for thier reliability in snowmobiles and a lot were made. Does this seem like a good match?
I was considering a conversion to a 4 stroke briggs like the new ones but was told that the drive trane would not hold up due to the increased torque. My understanding is that the 2 stroke generally has more torque than a 4 stroke. What is your opinion?
Thank You

the four strokes have more at the lower speeds wich is why they think thay have an edge, this is due to the fact that most if not all aatvs have a snowmobile type of primery power transmition, (centrfugal-cluch, belt, n tork-pully)
now if we had real cluches we would eat them 4 strokes for lunch!!!

steve richard, i want you to wright on the blackboard 100 times, " i will not swap a 2 stroke for a 4 stroke". a ccw motor is a japanese quality engine. it probably was a oem mtr for the argo. it came with a tilly or a walbro carb, and when properly tuned and set up it will "definately" run with tha other dogs!

Dave, you mention the clutch. Another reason for considering a Polaris is that the clutches (comet?) that Polaris uses have always been better than the rest-quicker, easier on belts.

yah it's probly so, i know thay can be "user tuned" for racing too! however i ment like in a car or like you would find on a harly or vulkan motorcycle, a driver controled "dump it at hi rev if thats what you like" clutch!!!
somthing that puts you in controle of the power rainge!
and i want to see one soon!
theres no good reasone we cant use chain drive from the engines to the trany with real cluches is there!
come on the 60's are gone, maybe we need shaft drives! why are there fingernail marks leading into this meleniem????
