Getting ready to buy a MaxII and it has a 16 hp briggs engine. What is the biggest motor I can replace it with? Basically the shells are all the same size right? I wanted to maybe put a 24 hp honda engine in would that work? The unit is a 1997 so its in pretty good shape. Or do I really need to change it out. My buddy has a maxII also but his is the 18 hp. My big concern is will there be a big difference in power or will it be pretty close? Any imformation would be much appreciated thanks.

Well I got a 16HP Briggs and my brother and I tool around in it and what's impressive is it goes up 30-35 degree trails with no problem at all. That is a pretty impressive set up your looking at , yea I wish I had an 18 HP but that is what I purchased and am extremely happy with it.Unless it has far too many and hard miles on it why don't you just kind of refurbish what is there. There are all kinds of little tricks to boost HP.Unless you want or would like to keep up with the Quads on straight dirt roads your going to loose even with a 18HP Briggs. That little 16 will take you places you only dreamed about in a Quad. The 18 probably won't get you there any faster. Have fun and enjoy!!!

Zook, I don't think you will notice much difference in the performance of the 16 Hp engine as compared to the 18 unless you will be doing a lot of steep with heavy loads or at high elevations. Both machines go the same speed and the T-20 is designed to keep RPMs up while reducing speed to handle torque requirements of climbing and heavy loads. The more hours on a machine, the faster they go. Be sure the 16 hp engine has the RPMs set at 4000 (no load), a clean air filter, clean fuel, good spark plugs and clean oil and it will surprise you.

If you decide to swap engines, a lot will fit. You will probably need to change drive belts and electrical wiring.

zook if you want power get a two stroke like a 503 rotax 2 stroke it will fly mine does stay away from any thing under 1985 getting parts can be an issue the rotax are the very best i think and stay away from chrome and naski bores they cost way to mutch to rebuild so if you want to go faster than 25 2 stroke is the way to go
