I have a Max II and need some help.
When you try to start it, it clicks, but will boost. So I replaced the battery last year and everything was fine.
Now, after setting-up for all summer (had new baby and did not have time to ride) did some maint. on it getting ready for duck season. Once again had the clicking when I tried to start it, but this time after boosting it off, it would not turn off at the switch.
Pulled the battery cable and it still kept running. So i undid the fuel line and let it die out. Does anyone have any idea what may be wrong??? I would appreciate any help as it is getting close to duck season.
Thanks,
George

George, check the wires on your ignition switch. Something is loose or your ignition switch could be bad.

George, I assume you have a Max with the Vanguard engine? The circuit used to kill the engine grounds out the ignition coils to stop the spark. The ignition is totally independent of the battery and whatever you do never apply voltage to the kill wire or you'll be buying 2 new armatures (coils) ! You can start, with your recoil of course, and run your engine with no battery whatsoever. So why isn't it shutting off when you turn off the key? It has a wire coming off the engine, passing through a connecter to the main wire harness and then going to the keyswitch. Then there has to be a ground wire from the switch to the engine or frame. Check the connections, the wires, and the switch. Oh, and if it kind of acts like it's partially shutting off when you turn the key to off it's probably the diode wire behind the recoil housing that connects the two seperate ignitions. Hope this helps, and remember not to touch a hot wire to the kill wire! One more thing, next time you need to shut her down without the keyswitch working you could try backing down the idle speed screw till it stops.
