I have a one wire alternator I would like to install in my Argo 8x8. I would like to mount it where the battery is supposed to sit. I have moved my battery to the back of my Argo. Can an alternator turn either direction and still work? Thanks for any help. Any pictures would be nice. Thanks

Hi Scott,
Yes an alternator can run in either direction.
A couple of things to note however, if the alt is old the brushes on the slip rings will be worn badly and my not work or last long if the direction of rotation is different. I advise that you fit new brushes. Lso the fan just under the pully will work better in the designed direction but this is not a problem as long as you dont get silly about the load you want to pull from it.

Where do you mount the drive pulley and where is the best place to mount the alternator. I would rather build the brackets myself than buy the alt kit from argo.

I have an Argo 8x8 with a Koler engine. The battery on the 8x8 is mounted up front in the engine area. I moved my battery from the front and mounted it behind the seat. I made a bracket that I mounted in the battery tray. I then installed my one wire alternator to that bracket. The Koler engine has a manual rope pull start pulley. I ran the fan belt from that pulley to the alternator. It works real well. Hope this helps. Thanks to everyone on this board for giving ideas.

Scott. The only ARGOs with a manual recoil with the kohler was the 8x8 Vanguard which was out at the same time the Magnum was. Is this the machine you have? Please send me a picture at argo_mag@hotmail.com
Thanks

David, The Argo 8x8 I have is the Magnum. I think it is a 1992. I'll have to see if I can get some pictures. It may be a little while though, got to finish up all of my outside chores.
