i am new to the amphi atvs i am cosidering buying a max IV. I am going to look at one tomorrow. WHAT IF? U FILLED THE BODY CAVITIES UP WITH THAT FOAM THEY PUT IN PONTOON BOATS. is this over kill how might a skid plate effect flaotation. I don't really intend to use it that much in water but I **** sure don't want the thing to sink.

ps i have no knowledge of the internels of the max IV

Look Tex, You shouldn't have to worry about sinking. If you think that MaxIV is going to sink without adding some sort of foam, you may need to look into purchasing an Argo. I have traveled many miles down the middle of rivers and across large bodies of water with my Argo Conquest & never even gave sinking a thought. Besides, after you see how it is built, you will know that the motor and chains could not function properly with foam surrounding them. I'm sure it will be fine, just make sure you get a bilge pump if you plan to spend a lot of time in water...Just in case of an emergency. Red Wolf

attex built a 8x8tracked aatv in the 70's
it had a body cavity filled with foam, or something like it to make it float.

the only failing was it didn't sell well because it was soooow biiig 7feet wide x 9feet long (if i remember correct.

WE made a kayak from the Folboat company. For floatation the front and rear of the boat was filled with styrofoam. I remember filling it up to the top with water & it would keep you afloat. You were wet but it was a safe, sort of feeling. Maybe filling up the dead air space witht htta expandable foam or some styrofoam cut tho shape would give you more floatation. It would probably be better if the foam was in the lower part of the body.

I have a question that is likely very obvious to some, but not to me. I can understand having styrofoam in a boat or something (an aluminum boat has it under the bench seats) But how would styrofoam help keep an ARGO or MAX floating in general. They are very unlikely to sink anyways because of the tires. I don't know about MAX, but the ARGO tires are like baloons, and they provide a lot of flotation. If you get swamped in the ARGO or MAX, you shouldn't have been in water that rough anyways, and if you are driving carefully, you know that weight shifting could be bad and you prevent it. But unless you are actually sinking, how would styrofoam or any other thing like that help? The body is wide, and keeps it up in water, wheels are like stabalizers, although they still scare me in water! Then again, I have never been comfortable in water with the ARGO just because I don't do it very often-don't have a reason to and lack of area to do it in. However, I have tried to swamp the ARGO or test its limits while being rocked back and forth vigorously, and it gets to a point and goes back. I think the greater risk is water entering from the front of the ARGO even in calm ripply water. It rides so low in the front, I often wonder if water is getting in or if the winch is partly in water. I have an 8x8 so yes, it rides much higher at the back and even a lot of weight only helps a bit. But seriously, how would extra flotation devices work inside the vehicle, unless they are outside. I may be totally missing the point of this, but I don't see how it would benifit unless you were actually sinking--HAS ANYONE ACTUALLY TOTALLY SUNK THEIR ARGO OR MAX OR 6X6, 8X8? nOT JUST PARTLY UNDERWATER, i MEAN SUNK RIGHT UNDER? vERY RARE CHANCE RIGHT?

David you are not missing the point and are right on the money. Flotation does nothing if it is inside of the unit. Except if you are swamped just like you said.
