I have a 16HP Tecumseh on my Max II (I know...TeJunkSeh) with a walbro carb. I can't find the number on the carb, but it has 3 adjusting screws but the only manual I have shows only 2. I am not a carb guy so I need some help with adjusting it. The engine is running really rich.

Here are my assumptions:
1) the first screw is for idle adjustment
2) the second (angled into the float bowl) is to adjust the amount of fuel flowing into the float (?)
3) the third is the actual jet on the throat of the intake.

What is the trick to leaning this thing out? The thing runs good, but just stinks up the air and the riders plus it spits black smoke (no oily smell, just unburned or poorly burned fuel).

The plug is new and in good shape.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

if it's running good exept for the smoke could it be the gas/oil mix
whats the mix your using? i have found new gas and oil's require less oil
(it's better stuff now so less is good)
like if your useing 20/1 try 45/1 with good syinthetic 2 cycle oil and medium - high octain gas, i use the midium as high octain often has too much detergent for 2 strokes, hope this helps

Steve: The three screws you are talking about are 1 Idle speed adjustment; just like you thought.
2 Main jet feed adjustment. This will adjust the fuel curve from off idle to wide open. (This will be the one you want to adjust)
3 The jet on the body of the carb is the idle fuel adjustment. (Fuel curve adjustment for idle only.)

You will want to turn the screw on the bottom of the float bowl in. The more you screw this screw in the less fuel the engine will get off idle. Do this first, if your engine is still rich at idle, then you need to turn the screw on the body in (maybe out if it is an air bleed), this will lean out the idle only. Then adjust idle speed and you should be done!!!!
One thing you might want to check is the float level. This needs to be set right or all of the adjustments you made won't work. It is a bear getting the carb off of the engine. I use a needle nose vice grips on the screws that hold it on the engine.
I have the same engine you do and I'm having some carb problems also. The only thing is; I need a new carb because mine is flat worn out. Hope this helps.
