I posted a similar question elsewhere, but this one has a slightly different twist.
I was perusing some engine dealer sites and noticed 40hp 447cc and 60hp 800cc two-stroke engines for sale, both air and liquid cooled. The max hp for these motors were at 8000rpms and the max torque figures were pretty low. So it would appear that these motors would work fine in a Max-like application if geared down appropriately.
The two-stroke is simpler, operates at a more extreme angles, and produces more power. Why don't they use them in the Max? Seems that a $10K Max IV 900T should come with something more exciting than a lawnmower engine.

OK guys let me put it this way a 4 stroke mite not be as fast as a quad but they don't float i have an older MaxIV with a 484cc 2 stroke it has the power trust me but the bottom end it don't but on open road it will run with a 4 wheeler and trust me it is so much fun when your out rideing with a quad and there is a tree down i go over it and keep going they must stop turn around and find another way to go then come the water they seem to sink i don't so what I'm saying is I'll take my 6x6 over a quad any day
PS mine makes 46hp @7000 RPM

don they shure did use them however manufactures of vehicles these days are under some preshure to use enviromently friendly wimp engines,

I have an Attex with a 484cc engine- great for speed. I also have a Max II with a 16hp Briggs. I was worried about it not being enough being used to the Attex. I have to say that I'm very pleased with what the 16hp Briggs does. I use the Max on some pretty extreme hills. It does take some getting used to the slower ride but then slower and quiet has it's benefits at times also. Good idea to have one of each!

Eric: What kind of low-end power does the 16hp provide? Can you tackle the same hills with Max that you take with the Attex?
I've been thinking about getting a Max, probably a IV, but I don't want to spend $10K on a riding lawn mower. Most of the specs on the Max are pretty impressive, EXCEPT the engine options.

Don,
Then buy an Attex! Seems pretty simple to me! IF you cant get up a hill in an attex you aint got no business going up it in the first place!

Don: I saw your other posts about power and speed. My question to you is: How fast do you want to go? I was told a new Max can do about 30. Like Mark, my Attex will top out at about 45. Do you really want to go faster than that with a skid-steer? About the power issue. The way the torque converter works on these machines makes that a non-issue. I have never done the math on the gearing but I bet it is more than a 10 to 1 ratio. That will turn my wimpy 16HP Argo into a 160hp brute!!! I will never win any speed contests but that same Argo will climb a messured 32 degree hill that almost everyone that sees it will call it a 50 degree+ hill. In short, like Fred said in another post, you will never run out of power on a hill. If you want to go any faster than that I would suggest you get the quad; or like Pete said, buy an Attex.

Don,
The Max will do the same hills that my Attex will. I do notice a difference on how they go down steep hills. The attex seems to do better but then it is quite a bit lighter than a Max. And the Max isn't quite broken in yet either. I bought the Max II because it is the closest thing you can get to an Attex in a brand new machine. I don't know where you live, but there is a green Max IV with a trailer near me for sale for $3000. I see it but I have never stopped to look at it.

Thank you for the information folks. I've been educated, I think. I can appreciate from a distance the problems with running a skid-steer at 30mph, and I'm hearing enough testimonials about the power to convince me that these machines are much more than blade-less lawnmowers.
The two Max dealers in Oregon are on the other end of the state - ~300 miles away.
Oregon, at least the part I live in, has plenty of hills, mud and yeuck for ATV riders in the winter. I wonder why I don't see any of the MAX or Argo vehicles out here?

Don,
You rarely see them anywhere, and as you said, there is not a dealer within 300 miles of you, obviously you would be a bit more likely to see them nearer the dealers.
