I am going to look at a 197? amphicat, are there any known problems with these that I should look for?
Any help would be appreciated.

If it is the US single speed model 0079 than I would say check the transmission to make sure that bothe sides are working. There is a ring gear inside that tends to brake if it is forced too much or just right. Also check the axle bearings and bushings, the inner ones are bushings and have a tendancy to be worn out. The body condition is always something to look at. The engine was a Sachs SA280, which likes an motor oil/gas mix rather than a 2 stroke oil/gas mix, so if it has been running the wrong mix than engine problems could be there. hello, i just bought a amphicat 1970.it got some holes and crackes in the bottom and no axels need to know what grade steel, to use and if fiberglass will work on body or silicone?thanks for your time.

Joe ,condradulations on getting a hold of an Amphicat. Do you know if it is an American or Canadian built Cat?The axels are made out of a very hard steel. Someone told me just what they are made out of but all I can remember is it was some kind of aircraft quality steel. They are only about 3/4" diameter. Mild steel that size wouldn't stand up very well. Are all the sprockets and bearings there too? You might have some luck checking out the Route 6x6 classified adds ,sometimes there is an Amphicat in there for parts that might have some axels . On the body cracks there are some old posts on the Discussion Board on ABS repair. ABS doesn't let much of anything like fiberglass or paint stick to it very well. Good luck .

The axles are hardend steel. Don't even try cold rolled as it will bend far too easy. I think Joel is correct that there is a parts machine listed in the classifieds. As for the body check with David 3rd, as I think he may have some ABS goop to fix it right up. Do you know which model you have yet? What engine is in it?.....
