Anyone have any info on modifying the clutch on the Max? When I lived in Florida I use to race a Honda Odyssey on a 1/4 mile flat dirt track. When I first got it I could barley keep up with everyone else. The guy I purchased it from suggested I modify the clutch, ( same type as Max and Snowmobiles use). I can't remember if it was the springs or weights that I changed out but what a big difference it made! Any ideas on where I could buy a modification kit like that? I think what it did was let the engine RPM increase before it started changing the ratio. I'm looking for more low end GRUNT! This 14hp seems to run out of power going up long hills.

I was planning on getting a new clutch for my Max. The stock one, besides being junk, is really only good to 5000 rpm. Since my engine revs higher, it is not optimized for use on this engine and it could possibly break. I am wanting to buy a Polaris clutch which will work better with this engine. You can get different color springs for the driven clutch also. They all do different things but I hear the green spring is best for most uses. You can get a lot more speed and power with a good clutch set up.

I did some mods to a clutch on my Arctic Cat sled. The sled pulled the skis up everytime you jamed the gas. The only thing is that the clutch engaged at 5,000 RPM'S. Be careful doing this becasue that 14 HP briggs will probably explode at anything over 5,000 RPM'S. The clutch kit I put in my sled was $600 and I bought it in a magizine called Shade Tree Mechanic.My advice would be to put in another $400 and buy a bigger engine. Just a thought..Kemp

I wasn't looking to go to 5,000 RPM before the clutch started to enguage, only a couple of hunderd more RPM's. I tried to call Recreatives Industries yesterday and talk to their parts department but, all I could get was there voice mail which said to leave a message and they would call me back. I left the messaage but they never called back. I'll try again today and let everyone know if they offer anything in the way of a clutch mod. One last thing does anyone know who manufactures this clutch?

Found the people who make the clutches for the Max, here's their Web address www.hoffcocomet.com
They also carry a lot of snowmobile stuff to. Mostly clutches and shocks. I also spoke to a guy there, (Chuck), said you could tell which clutch you have by the belt width, 1 7/16" or 1 3/16".
The 1 7/16" is the model 1190 clutch and the
1 3/16" is the 780. He is supposed to mail me some information. I'll let you all know what he sends me.

guy's don't get your hopes up. for the most part all your going to be able to accomplish with the clutch, is a shift in engagement rpm, as well as downshift characteristic's. the drive and driven clutch on your aatv's, are very similar to the automatic transmission's in your vehicles. you can change when they shift, but your not increasing the power of the engine, just how the power is applied. go to some of the karting web sites and look around for engine mod's. you can get some pretty respectable increases in power from your engine, without hurting the wallet or engine life. try bob evan's four cycle karting or brigg's web site.

Where can I get the nylon sliders for an older model MAX IV, the unit that my clutch came out of is probably from the early80's.

Try Richard or RI for parts. Put a little silicone spray on what you have (and I mean just a dab on the nylon part only) and you are probably good for another ten or so years. All kidding aside, lubricant in the right spots and clean/dry in all others, the Salsbury (whatever its name is now) units are very longlasting and trouble free. Belt dressing and the proper belt(new belt if too narrow) are more likely the fix to any clutch problem. Internal springs do break, but I have never seen or had a clutch problem (except for a dab of lubricant on the nylon pads of the troque converter).

I must be extremely unlucky, one of the sliders came/broke off and now the ramp and the bore are chewed up, time for a new one.
