my max4 is a 84 with a new 18 hp bs vanguard
the problem is my lawnmower is faster than the max
i dont now if the belt is wrong or if the clutch is bad
the max is new to me and the kid i got it from didnt now any thing

sounds like your gearing is low for a small hp. motor or your clutches are not working. I work check your clutches to make sure they are working properly. put it in nuetral and give it some gas and see if the clutch on the motor is grabbing the belt and also check the secondary clutch on the t-20 to see if it is closing in on the belt.
if that is working it might be the bands in the t-20 or something and I will leave that to fred, I dont know to much about the workings of the t-20.

Mantis, My guess is that someone traded the 18 hp 4 stroke Briggs in place of a two stroke engine and your clutches need to have the springs changed because the RPMs are about 1/2 for the Briggs as opposed to most two strokes. If your belt comes off very easily, it is too long and will also prevent getting full RPM to the driven pulley. The belt should ride up almost to the edge of the pulley on the drive pulley (the one on the engine) when you rev up the engine. If you have a snowmobile shop around, they are the best with clutches - otherwise, find a lawnmower/small engine shop.

The t-20 works or it doesn't. It has nothing to do with speed and only needs adjustment to adjust the travel of the laterals.

the tranny is now adjusted all the way on the left side so the plundgers are sticking out a little but it turms great to both sides but i assume the tans is about to the end of its life hopefully i will master it before a rebuild so it will last longer

the belt is not riding up on the engine clutch the motor before was a 16 hp single tecumse so i guess iwill try a new belt before going to the shop for the clutches

One reason for the belt not riding up on the drive clutch is the driven (transmission side) is not opening up to let the belt ride down in it. Spray some penetrating oil on the driven side (only on the shaft) and work it manually. You should be able to grab one half with one hand and one half with the other and get them to spin. Once you get them rotating, you have to try to pry them apart while moivng them. You will be working against the spring pressure, so you may have to get someone with a piece of wood to help spread the halves while you work them back and fourth.
Once everything seems like its moving reasonably smooth, take it out for a ride where hopefully you will notice a dfference. My ATTEX took a few rides and a few applications of penetrating oil to get it working smooth. Now it goes too fast!

On the other side of things, the drive clutch could have the same problem with rust and corrosion so I would try the penetrating oil on the drive side too. You probably have to take the cltuch off to get the oil into where you want it and not all over the drive belt and mating surfaces.

thanks guys cleaned the clutch and a new belt what a difference ready to go
