I have a 2000 max iv. i found out today that the rouble i am having that i thought was the transmission bands slipping is actually the belt. the book says to check belt tension to see if it has 1 1/4" deflection. mine has over 2 1/2". It then says to adjust loosen the bolts that connect the engine bracket to the chasis and slide either forward or backwards. my mounting bracket has no slots to slide. Does anyone know how to tighten the belt?

Newmax, call RI and they can tell you. I only know how to adjust the belt on a Max II.
Make sure you are measuring it right. A loose belt causes you to lose low end because the primary clutch must move farther to get the belt tight. That puts you in a higher gear. You need all the power you can get. The 26" tires are a big load for the 18hp.

Newmax,
The tension on the belt should be about 1 1/2 to 2". Check the edges of the belt and make sure they are not glazed. If so, take sand paper and rough it up. If you have more then 2 1/2" of play, then you might want to tighten the belt up. Hope this helps you out some.

Isaac How much play should there be in my Max II rubber belt that goes to that aluminum drum or wheel by the tranny? Also there is about a 2 inch gap in my clutch assembly drum - do I need to re-adjust it? Thanks, Frank

HEY FRANK:
the variable speed belt system suppose to be tunned as follow:
to know if belt wide is between specification just check that the upper part of the belt (outside)match the t-20 tranny pulley's border 1/16" +/-...on the clutch (engine) side..it's suppose to get a clearance of 0.060" with engine stopped..the belt to be use on this system is a variable speed designed...it can be easily recognized by it's number that include a "v"..this number run as follow "460v1922"
where
460 means 46" inches long
"v" means variable speed
19 means 19/16"
22 means 22 degree edge
on my max fitted with 295 rockwell engine this is the "right belt"...i also use metric ones with 1180v28
that means 1180 mm long by 28mm wide
by the way, what do you mean when you mention "2 inch gap in clutch assembly"???...
