Hey,
I'm just wondering out of curiosity and maybe for a future project, but how much horsepower can a MAX take before u start to rip it apart?
By david3rdd on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
i have sean photos of a 100 hp alcohole engine powerd attex, so i figure a max might just do it too,
By terry harrison (Th3) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
i was told that the t-20 was built to handle up to 75 horsepower.

attex used them in 100 hp alcohol fuel racer

I can't possibly imagine having 100 hp in my ARGO. How would u control the thing with that much power? Is it geared for speed and less power or less speed and tons of power. That would scare the crap out of me trying ot drive an ARGO with a lot of power. I think that if I learned to drive the ARGO and they had higher powered engines, I would be alright with it. Then again, I drive - cars and trucks are well over 100 hp, and they don't bother me at all. I think its just the fact that their are chains running under your feet, and only plastic (ok, fine- hdpe but still) its not indestructable. If something broke, you may be dead. They must have pretty heavy brakes on there too to run that much power.

David, I don't think Argo was all that interested in the racing scene back then as I don't recall reading about them that much. The racing was pretty much headed by Attex,Scrambler,Max And Terra Tiger back then as I recall with Attex being the major player. Do you know if Argo used 440 and 500 cc engines back then? Maybe they didn't race because they were front engined although the Terra Tiger was front engined. If you check out the racing pictures on Route 6x6 most of the machines were Attexes and they did roll over a lot!

david k,
good point, me and my father(an engineer and boilermaker.) me(a welder/boiler maker) had a big discussion about chains coming loose the results: CHAIN BRAKING:
chain breaking won't injure you (in the normal operating seats ofa max or argo)
if it was a highly stressed chain(pulling a big rig or a 2ton 4x4 ) maybe?
lots of tow truck drivers get ingured by snapping cables like this pullin 4x4's out of rivers.
if it was turning at high speed 10,000rpm+ maybe?
but not on one of these6x6 es.
SPROKETS: sprokets are like power saws and should be put as far away from feet as possable,
or shields / gards installed to proteck hands / feet clothing, etc.
SPINNING SHAFTS: if fast enought will injure, protect with guards.
p.s that much hp(100) probably wouldn't be used that means extra weight for nothing.
hope this helps shane.

yes argo used some big ol engines, theres a few ss owners here in our discussion board that can atest to this, more power just takes practis to controll, now under such power a broken chain would be a concern, and not just to your feet, as chain would worry about linear things and there not inlign very often with human body parts, however they do ball up on sprokets and smash threw fraims, they most sertinly blow holes threw vehicle body's , but worst thing i find myself to hapen is that sudden stop, wether just 1 axel or 1 side of machine because it can cause a crash!
on more ocations than i like to remember id be flyin along when the thought would enter my concensess "what if" "what iff my chain broke right now" id be runing flat out on old raised trail that was a train tracks years ago, looking down steep banks 40 or 50 feet on ether side, ligned here and there with trees, yup sends shivers down my neck just thinking about it, dosent slow me down none but sends them shivers.

Dave Berger, I honestly consider you one of the senior experts on the board (no offence to anyone else, but Dave gave me my first answer when I first posted on this board and he was dead on and I had the problem fixed easily the next time I ran the ARGO) But my question is, you said that the chain may rip through the body of the machine, Do you think it would throw the floor pan out of the machine, since all thats holding them down is a cotter pin and only 2 in the front, 4 in the back (8x8) or 2 in the back for a 6x6. I can't imagine how those pans would keep the chains down other than maybe to break the force of the chain as it whipped off. Am I making any sence at all here or not?
By david berger (Davidrrrd) on Unrecorded Date: Edit |
well id think the floor pan might just posably fold up away from chains as they flop arround sprokets, there free enoph to bend a little near cotter pins, as chains might be far from the cotter pins ,
from my expereances in the past i have only felt bumping agenced floorboards in attex and max when my broken chains rolled up around sprokets, your hull however has knowere to go, chains too smoth in most cases to burn a hole in a short time. but streching out the hull till it splits, well shur it can do that.if the balled chain hits a fraim it will distort, rip and bend it, depending on how much enertua you had to absorb in order to stop, (good luck unjambing that ball)
i have driven whole trail rides with a chain off the sprokets, and just sitting on axels and even my frount brake bell on my max,
on the other hand a section of broken chain can also become loged in another chains rotation with another sproket, in this case the other chain may brake and the sproket will be screwed up for shure,
on a maxII if this happens to your center axel sproket it can bend your jack shaft as well,
this is a tooth destroying nightmere.
it has not bin my expireance that chain will wip outward and cause damage, but rather it acumulats till theres resistans enope to stop rotation,
anyone else?
P.S. thanks for considering me a "senior expert"

daved k,
as i said above on the 19th,
sprokets on these 6x6's won't "whip" you thair just not under enough tension ,or speed, enertia to do so.
it will just go loose and flop of the end of sprokets.
i do agree with david however that it could ball up and come through floor before you can stop, or destroy the 6x6.
if you herd this happening i'm shure you would jump high enough to be out of it's way.
this is why i don't like the edge design of chains under seats and feet.
and if a broken chain gets in the path of the other unbroken chains =twisted metal.
david burger,
i didn't allow for how difficult it would be to stop in the above post, if you can drive with a broken chain like you say, it couldn't be that bad.
remember a flat tyre in a 4x4 can = big smash.
see ya shane.
