Well I rebuilt the carb and fuel pump on my 94 Max2, 16hp, Briggs. Runs great, except for one small problem, that I cant figure out, spent all afternoon, bending over this machine, and cant for the life of me, figure out what I did wrong. When I took off the carb, I disconnected the govener link and spring from the throttle shaft, took the spring off the little black clip and pulled the link out of the hole, rebuilt the carb, put it back togother, hooked everything back up.....and guess what...instead of the throotle shaft stop resting against the idle adjustment screw, it pulls it to full throttle. I have no throttle control at all. I touched nothing on the govner, yet it works backward. What did I do wrong? My back is killing me from bending over this darn thing, all day. I want to start playing around with springs on the govener, to fix it, but i know i will just mess it up more, since i didnt touch anything over there in the first place. HELP!! Want to take this beast up north for the 4th. Any suggestions??

Probably something simple.
The plate that the spring attached to, does it have 1 or 2 positions to mount to? If it has 2 you may have chosen the wrong hole.
When you connected the governor link, did you put the clip in from the outside in?
One of the more stupid things I have done was not attaching the needle valve to the float assembly. Spent 2 weekends trying to figure out why the pump was not filling the carb. Replace the hoses, the pump, etc, only to find out it was something very simple.

I did not move the spring at all from the holes, left it attached where it was. I did put the link in from the outside, I am sure it is something simple, just cant seem to figure it out, will try again tonight, when i have a little more patients. But thanks for the info, yeah its funny that the shop manual does not mention, that the needle is attached to the float assemble, I can see where someone would just drop it in, put the float in and wonder way its not getting any gas. Thanks again for the tips, when I find out what I did, or didnt do, I will post it back here, so others can learn from my mistakes.

Is there anyway possible that when I changed the trottle shaft seal, and re-installed the throttle shaft, that I put it in the wrong way?????? I know the bevel on the throttle plate is in the right direction, but could it be that if it was rotated 180 degrees in the wrong direction, that when the govener is pulling the trottle out now away from the idle stop, if it was rotated around it would pull the tab up and out toward the idle stop? Hell I dont know. Just a thought. Hate to pull the carb off again, if there is no possiblitiy of it doing that.

You said it runs great, but did you run it with the governor unhooked for a test run, or does it just rev to the moon when you start it? The reason I ask is because when the Briggs is off, the governor holds the throttle wide open. The instant the engine starts it will go back to idle. Start the engine and check the governor from there.

Did you take the throttle shaft apart?

something you may want to try even with a manual. take pictures with a digital camera as you take something apart. i did that the other day for the first time and it saved me a bunch of time later when i had to put everything back.

Brandon a big hug, and a six pack to ya guy HA HA! didnt know the gov held the throttle wide open, I just saw it was wide open and thought something was wrong, so I unhooked the gov to start it, and had to hold the throttle back to the stop or it would scream to the moon, and it ran fine then. So after reading your post, went outside hooked up the gov....started it....and it ran great, took it around the block like a little kid (wife shakeing here head in disgust) Thanks so much for all you guys posts and help, this site is the best, and all you guys and gals are the greatest. Taking the beast up north for the 4th, to get into some trouble. Thanks again.
