Doing some service work yesterday when I noticed that the chains that drive my front tire's are really getting lose and are slapping pretty good. My Question is this. Is there a way to tighten them? Do they need to be loser that the others. Should I replace them? Can I get the double chain locally or do i need to order them. Also the best way to change them. Any info would be appriceated.

Steve,
If the chains are hitting the frame they need replaced. shoup manufacturing 1-800-627-6137 for chain and buy the american. its twice the money but is ten times as strong and lasts' ten times longer. do not remove links to tighten the chain because it puts the pitch out of specs.

steve,
you might check to see if your axles/bearing housing are tight.otherwise it is time for new chains. mine came loose on my bigfoot. and the chains wwent real loose.on mine it was the inner bearing,a bolt came out after about 3hrs of riding.if you can find diamond brand chain some where near you i would suggest you get it.very good stuff.buy it in bulk and invest in a chain breaker, and a pair of needle nose vice grips.you will need to notch the vice-grips so you can pull the chain tight enough to put in your master-link.if and when you take off your old chain...COUNT YOUR LINKS!!!!if memmory serves i believe there are 42 links on the front drive chains.this is just basic stuff,if you need more info,go to the archives and go to the chain section.much more detail there. good luck.
