I have a 1990 MAX II 16hp with over 500 hours I have went through
4 sets (16 units) of the stupid chain adjusters. They cost over 70$
each unit from the dealer, anyone have any ideas on fixing this problem

Howard, What is the problem that you are replacing your adjusters? And how many times have you changed your chains in that time period?

A couple of things to think about. The springs that hold the two metal pieces together can be replaced (best to do it out of the machine to be sure it is in the right place) and it is important to keep it clean between the two pieces that slide so that the notches make good contact and hold.

I also might suggest dealing direct with the factory as your $70.00 figure sounds a little high to me, unless it is an installed price. I haven't bought any replacement adjusters for about three years, but I don't think they have doubled in that time.

My '99 Max II had about 300 hours on it and the nylon adjusters were nearly worn out, but never broke once. Where and how did your adjusters break or slip?
Looks like a new adjuster is only about $40, with the bracket and all. Are you talking Canadian dollars?

I agree the adjusters are junk, they worked for a years but
got sloppy, I just screwed tehn down, sure a a pain to adjust
I heard Richard was coming out with a set, I will send him
a email and see.

16 units? Are you sure? Maybe you have some alignment problems
as those frames are pretty light. The groves in the ratchets get packed with dirt
and grit, then the teeth slip, then after sliping a few time the edges on these
teeth get wore and they never hold, anyway silly design. I got tired of fooling
with mine too so I have a set of chain adjusters from Richard Clark
on my 88 Max II, as my originals were pretty bad too. These new chain tighters are pretty good, very heavy, he said my set was one of the first ones he did, just check with him, I guess he is still has some. I understand they also fit other machines too.. But as many others have pointed out I am no expert. So check for your self You are welcome to emil me offline and I will be happy to tell you more. I am thinking about becoming both a Max and an Argo dealer

Howard:
I just got my set of chain adjusters from Richard's Relics
they work nice, very strong, bolted in and fix the silly
chain adjuster problems. I suggest you try a set too
