I have a new Argo 8x8 with the 18 HP Briggs Vanguard. Good engine!! The only concern I'd have with increasing the power in your machine is the brakes heating up too much. You might want to add a brake cooling fan (or 2) as part of the upgrade?

PJ,
You might want to stay with the tried and proven. The Vanguard engines are very reliable and are easier to find support for when it cmes to parts and service.
Take a look at the torque curves of the Honda and the Briggs engines. I think you'll be surprised when you find that the Briggs torque curve is relatively flat and the engine develops most of its torque at low RPM ranges. The Honda by comparison makes its torque at much higher revs. This makes one engine more drivable in the deep woods than the other.
When it comes to mounting the driver clutch to the Briggs, Argo has already done the work. The Honda could be done with a little machine too of course.
Perhaps the most important consideration is heat dissipation. The Briggs and the honda are both air cooled engines. Argo sells ducting for the Briggs to keep the body from melting!! The honda would require fabrication of something similar. Again a little more engineering would be required.
I'm not a Briggs salesman by the way but I do have a little experience with Briggs and have found the Vanguard engines to be very good engines for a 6x6.
I hope this info helps!

I did consider that conversion. I stayed with the TEC
engine because when ARGO installed the VANGUARD they
also redesigned the upper body for more space. (they raised
the whole top 3" , check out the way a vanguard argo body looks
in the front) I just rebuilt the TEC oh160, runs well and believe
it or not it WILL out pull a 16hp VANGUARD.
I hope this statement does not start a war
