Hi Kevinv,
you say that the external alternator is rated at 45A and will run a 1200-1400 watt inverter.
This does not add up 45x12=450watts so if you are running an inverter that big it is sucking the guts out of your battery, as you need about 100A for 1000 watts taking in to account conversion losses.

I was simply cross referencing the rated requirements on the package of the inverter sold at the local Quality Farm and Fleet.
