I just swamped my powertrac engine was under water breifly til we winched it out. It got NO water into the crankcase but sucked enough into the carb throat to hydraulic lock the engine.
It is a 25 horse Kohler Command Horizontal with a hydraulic drive pump on each end. I hoped it was a breather problem but after taking it apart doubt it. Oil is really spraying out the breather tube that goes into the air cleaner. Reminds me of an engine with a couple hundred thousand miles on it and worn out cylinders! Can anyone think of anything I should check before pulling the heads?
Thanks Dave,

There is water in the crank case for sure. Drain all the oil and put in new oil. It sounds like you already had it running? The oil will begin turning white, but pull that drain plug and lots of water will come out before any oil. Several oil changes will be needed before the oil is clean again. Running diesel fuel for about 20 seconds really helps to clean out the water while still lightly lubing the engine.
I just put my 4x4 under water so I'm in the same spot you are. Serious engine damage was the result.

Strange as it sounds there was no water in the crankcase! I've pulled the engine (major job due to the pumps)and torn it down, everything looks fine! Oil was good, rings look almost new! only sign of water in the engine was one cylinder face had turned bronze in color from sudden cooling. Kohler says that's no problem. I've ordered new gasket set and reed valve for the breather (Kohler says reed valve is most common cause of vacuum leak on the command engines. Should have everything by monday or tuesday and put it back together!

Be sure to check the rod for straightness. If you hydro'ed the engine there is a good chance it will be bent.
