My Boss has the original Kohler engine in it. The carb has two fuel line hook ups plus the vacuum port on the engine. I have always used a fuel pump with this type set up. From what I can see, this engine and carb works without the pump. It had no fuel line on it.
The Rotax equiped Boss had the line from the tank, then a tee making two lines, one to each line hookup on the carb. I've never seen it done that way. How should I hook up this Kohler?

The carb has a fuel pump built in, I assume it is a Tillotson ? The vacuum port on the engine should be connected to the fitting on the bottom of the carb, it should be on the left side of one one of the plates, the fitting should point straight down.
There should be either a spot for a spin-on filter, or fitting with a screw through it on the very bottom of the carb, that is for the fuel in to the carb. If there is a third fitting (on the right side of the carb body) it is for fuel return to the tank. If your tank does not have a place to connect the return line, you can set it up like the Rotax was. The return line in the tank helped keep the fuel mixed and the end of the supply line clean, but I wouldn't go to a lot of trouble to install it that way.

heh heh, well your tilotsen has a built in pump,
(the plates as sean from the side vue)
but thats the first time i have herd that one too!
the output back too tank line even carries away some air bubles as well so it should go back to tank if posable, the spring inside the carb might be set with a pas threw retern line in mind so it could cause problems to just block it, but try to just block it temporarely first too see how that works,
i have this picture in my mind of little bubles goin around and around threw that t fitting, heh heh heh

Roadwolf, one Trail Boss wasn't good enough for me so I bought two. You can see them on my web site.
I appreciate the help and I'll get it hooked up next time I work on it. The Kohler Boss just needs to be cleaned and fuel hooked up. I can ride that one a little while I restore the other. The Rotax Boss is taken apart all the way down to the bare frame with axles sticking out. The sprockets have very tough spiral pins in them and are siezed to the axle. Hopefully I will not have a problem with pins breaking like the Boss is famous for.

Did some work on the beast today. I hooked up the fuel, all it has is a fill from the bottom of the bowl and one hookup on the right side (standing at the back of the machine). It is angled upward and has a reduced size hole. It must be vacuum so I hooked that to the engine. Sound good? Never got far enough to try it but the carb is full of new gas.
I got a new battery, ignition switch, and solinoid. Hooked everything up with a hot wire and solinoid wire to the ignition. Then the black wire from the engine, which I surely thought was a kill, was hooked to what I thought was a ground on the switch. Too much thinking in that area and I blew up everything. lol... With everything together I touched the main ground to the battery. It sparked like power was drawn, and you wouldn't believe it but... my engine burst into flames. How does this always happen to me? It was real small but it appears the ignition inside the flywheel caught fire. I blew it out but I did have water standing by. I don't know if anything was damaged but I later found out that the ignition switch is not so clearly labeled, and I really don't know what I hooked to what. One thing is for sure, I can't stop laughing about it!
The starter is currently not working but has worked before. It has no spring to kick the gear back so that has to be fixed first. I'm starting to think a new Briggs is in the works for this Boss also.

oooh no!
you don't ever put power into your ignition!
its self contained within the engine!
you only need a kill swich to stop it,
a hot wire can be hooked up to output from voltage reg/rectifyer as thats the protected side of a diode that keeps yet another coil inside your engine from frying,
please get a wireing diagram or help from a certifyed 2 stroker,
what is it with you and fire?
your carb might be geting vacume from the base threw the gasket, the angled line out of top is likely a retern line,
it's probly too late for your stator plate now but maybe it can be wired diferently and still work, try to get your next fire on video ok.

Thanks Dave I'm going to check into that stuff. I'm doubtful about the charging system still working. It turns out that all those problems were from a faulty ignition switch, yes the brand new one. It ran hot to the ground (fried all that important stuff) and also turns to far past the Start position. When turning the key to start, it turns on then off quickly. Barely turning the key will make contact and the starter goes like it should. That one went back to the parts store and I'll order the right one from RI.
I got a new spark plug today and the beast is alive. After lots of work it idled for a while and ran fairly smooth. It seems to be getting to much or not enough gas. Lots of gas pouring out the carb. I shut it down using the ground wire that got heated up last night, and it worked fine. I guess it's not totally destroyed in there.
Hey Steve, I don't remember seeing you at any of our 6x6 rides. Do you own a 6x6 or just talk the talk? More importantly, have you ever contributed any useful 6x6 information to thise board?

Brandon, the fitting with the small hole is a return line. If you have this running into the crankcase, your putting fuel directly into the crankcase. That would explain some of the rough running if you didn't already change it.

I do not post much on the board because I am not a 6x6 expert, nor
do I claim to be one. It is just some people still make me upset. However
I would like to meet most of the people on this board, the majority
seem to be fine, honest people. Really a tribute to how a internet group
can be good. I work out of the country, but will be retiring soon, then I
will make it to a few of the rides, I want to go to Humpherys and to Petes
now famous rides. I like in TN and will even try to put on a ride in the Jeleco
off road area.
Mr Clark would not want me to get "it all going" again, I am sorry
I brought it up. I am happy for everything he as done for the 6x6 world.
To answer your question. Lets just say some members of this board used to slam folks, tell people how stupid they were, and in general
were a pain in the butt. To the point the board lost members
due to these actions. At that time is when Richard
had to start having the board moderated, to save the board.
I am happy he did as this board is the best board on the web.
No fighting, no spam, no crap, no off subject stuff, no self
promotion, just a fine group of people enjoying each other.
Long time route6x6 members know who I am talking about, but
I guess most people do finally grow up.
Thanks richard for providing use route6x6, I am sorry I
brought it up again, if just makes me so mad how a few people
tried to ruin it for everybody.
