i"m in the middle of redoing a attex 440 i have the trans out and in half but i can seem to get plate off one side tryed hammer and chisel but i"m afraid of breaking case any ideas ? thanks tom

Is the "C" Clip off?

Is the pin that holds the brake bands stuck or jammed in the hole inside of the flange bolt holes? When it's in there it's pretty tight.

I agree that 2 screwdrivers should get it off.

2 sets of hands or a large vise will make the job much easier. You can always turn it upside down over a soft area & let gravity take effect

kush that could be the problem i can see that pin i"ve even tried driving it back but it wont move.i just keep trying the 2 screw drivers thanks tom

Tom, With the tranny separated, have the half with the center plate resting on the driven pulley (if pulley is removed, block it up with the center plate up). Remove the "c" clip from the input shaft that goes into the other half of the tranny. With the tranny middle facing up and the "c" clip removed, you should have no problem slipping the center plate off (the gasket area could be stuck by goop, but once the plate is moveable, it should slip right off by hand). All tranny parts disassemble easily when in the right position. To put it back together, make sure the open half of the tranny is blocked up on the output shaft (middle of tranny facing up)and lower the half with the center plate down and into the blocked up open section.

fred i still dont see this c clip other than the one on the input shaft but that shaft is still hooked the clutch it came out with other half of trany tom

OK, Tom, maybe I understand now. You have the bolts out that hold both halves together, but each half is not apart and on its own.

If this is the situation, block the tranny up sitting on the right hand output shaft (a couple of 4x4 pieces under the sprocket works perfectly). Lift the half with the driven pulley straight up (the center plate is held on to this half by the c clip on the small end of the input shaft- keeps all the parts from falling out). If it doesn't slide apart, wiggle the driven pulley just a little bit to release any bind. It should slip right off. If the open half of the tranny (right side) isn't sitting with the open end up, parts will all out.

The gear at the end of the shaft sticking out of the t-20 half is held in with a c-clip which can be removed allowing the gear to slip off and then the center plate will fall off the transmission. I have found the t-20 to be an incredibly easy trans to dissasemble, and with care nothing will be damaged. Be careful with the bands though, it's easy to gouge them out if the drums drop out fast. There is no clutch anywhere in the case, just gears drums and bands. I used to fool with an attex baker hill trans and the t-20 is better built although heavier. It's amazing how many 6x6 guys have never opened one, it must testify to their reliability!!

ok thanks guys i try that tonite and see what happens now that i know where the c clip is located as far as the bands aren"t they suposed to have some sort of coating on them ? the ones in the other have very little and in some spots none thanks again tom

attexsixwheeler and fred i still dont see the c clip the only thing inside the gear is a bearing there was a c clip that held the brake disc on i "ve tried prying the gear off and it wont move either. tom

david i wont be getting pictures till the first of week (need digital camra) is the baker hill simlar to the t-20 ? the guy i brought this from said it has the t-20 in it. a little history this side of trans would not move this is the reseason for tearing it apart.is it possible that something broke inside not letting center plate come off? i did get the manaul from r&i ind. today and it looks like what i have except on the rightside gear they are showing a snap ring between the grease seal and bearing i poped the grease seal out and there is no snap ring other than that all the other details looks like the half i have apart as far as gears and bands thanks tom

to all those that helped with the t-20 problem i got it apart thanks again tom ps can the bearing and grease ring in the end of the gear shaft still be brought? i"m going the have to bust this to get it out all the needles fell out

yes but get bearing # from race first if posable before you destroy it, or get best meshurment posabable from inside shaft size to outside size of hole it's in, ect'' before callin ri as there have bin may rivitions along threw the years
