Half Tracks for Argo 8x8???

Has anybody tried to use Half of the tracks on an 8X8 Argo?

What I mean is to install tracks on the two front tires only and leave the two rear tires without tracks (and do the same on both sides). Since the front is heavier because of the engine, it needs more flotation in deep snow. But this setup may be easier to turn in deep snow and move faster in water compared to having tracks on all of the wheels.

This may not be worth trying on a 6x6 though!

Any comments?

I have been using half tracks for 2 years. My dealer suggested it instead of a full set. He said that it will handle 90% of the conditions and it is much easier on the machine (especially when put in the front). It does work well as long as you don't have a crusty upper layer over powder. That was the only time I got stuck. I think a full track system might have trouble with it. Haven't tried it in water.

Is their enough room between the 2nd and 3rd tire for the track to turn?

I've had no problem with rubbing between the 2nd and 3rd tires. The tracks were argo standard plastic tracks (not supertracks). The seem pretty sturdy but I haven't used them a huge amount. One tip my dealer gave me was to lock tight every set screw but one. Then mark the link without locktight with a metal screw on the outside edge of the plastic and use that hinge to detach the tracks every time. Make sure when you put them on you have the metal screw showing on the outside so you can find that link easily. I have a 1996 response.

TOM PIKE

If you run a half track system on the front of the ARGO 8x8, and its only on the two front tires, doesn't it stop it from driving in the water? If you have the full track system on, how is it in water? Does having tracks in front slow it down much and does it still turn easily in the bush?

In addion to my last question, do you use the half track system year round of mainly in winter? Also, do you have to have the 1/2 segments or can you use the full segments?

I haven't tried the half set in the water. I only use them when there is snow around and I tend stay out of the water in the winter. I imagine it wouldn't be too good (I don't find it very functional without the tracks and their turbulence would just make things worse). I have a slow river nearby and tend to go in up river and leave downriver. I don't depend on the wheels propelling me much. I don't know if i have half segments or not. Each piece has one keeper for the inside of the tire and one for the outside. As far as turning it works great. It makes the machine slightly wider so the tracks can sometimes catch a small tree.
